What are the responsibilities and job description for the Metallurgist position at ALD Thermal Treatment, Inc.?
Summary of Position:
Provides metallurgical expertise and technical support to the production department and process development.
Primary Duties of Position:
- Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.
- Perform root cause analysis of failures.
- Provide technical support of heat treat process and metallurgical lab on daily basis.
- Assist in development of heat treat parameters for new materials and the improvement of existing methods.
- Perform required metallurgical testing analysis; prepares and evaluates mounted samples when necessary.
- Research metallurgical properties of current and proposed materials.
- Conduct metallurgical failure test analysis and propose corrective/preventative action.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Develop process simulations and heat treat/carburization models.
- Develop recipes in heat treat furnaces.
- Program recipes for implementation in heat treat furnaces.
- Perform test cycles and apply appropriate requirements to meet customer specifications for heat treat protocol.
- Support the Research and Development of new products and process.
- Actively contribute to the continuous improvements of current products and processes.
- Review customer specifications and engineering drawings.
- Assist in APQP for new product development as well as existing product maintenance.
- Assist in creation/improvement of Procedures/Work Instructions for Production/MET Lab.
- Troubleshoot and correct all metallurgical equipment as well as gear measurement equipment.
- Capture and maintain critical process data for Research and Development projects.
- Complete all aspects of lab inspection, including but not limited to; calibrating Met Lab equipment, case depth and effective case depth inspection, cleaning saws, cutting parts, data entry using Babtec System, microstructure inspection, hardness testing, polishing of parts, preparation of load certification and refilling of saw coolant.
- Complete all aspects of Production processes, including but not limited to; Load Build, SSP/OIP/VZKQ, Shot Peen, Shot Blast, Post Wash and Pack out.
- Develop and maintain fixture requirement for both new and current product and process.
- Communicate with customer as necessary in regard to all research and development projects as well as customer complaints and requests.
- Plan and train personnel on Technical requirements and new processes for all ALD locations.
- Support MET Lab Supervisor and aid as immediate back up.
- Ensuring optimization and efficiency of heat treat processes and equipment.
- Daily review and disposition of product suspect/non-conforming material.
- Audit processes for accuracy and efficiency, report findings as necessary to Management.
- Lead problem solving teams and activities.
- Promote positivity and productivity to MET Lab Technicians.
- Working directly with Metallurgist, MET Lab Supervisor, Heat Treat Engineer on disposition of product.
- Attend all necessary meetings including, but not limited to APQP Meetings, Employee Meetings, PPAP Review Meetings, Corrective Action Meetings and Production Meetings.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have Heat Treating experience.
- Must have Supervisory Skills.
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite. Previous experience working within Quality Software and ERP systems, or ability to learn Quality Software and ERP Systems.
- Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
- Ability to multi-task and handle multiple projects at one time without sacrificing quality of work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively interact with all members of the organization and work with cross-functional teams.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
- Must be able to read and understand documents written in English and be able to speak English as it pertains to the position.
- Strong understanding of automotive quality requirements, including but not limited to IATF 16949 and AS 9100.
Required Education and Years of Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering or equivalent required. Master's Degree strongly preferred.
- 5 years of experience as a Metallurgist with previous heat-treating experience.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time
- Must be able to bend, stoop and lift 50 pounds
- Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs (i.e. climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials.
- Must be able to work under high temperature conditions
- Must be able to pass a vision and color-blind test
