Summary
As a Market Attendant, you'll be a friendly face helping guests explore and purchase a unique mix of products and services — from local art and gifts to beer, wine, seafood, ice cream, and outdoor gear. You'll share your knowledge of the area’s geography, history, and points of interest, along with insight into local artists and their work. Your goal is to deliver warm, personalized service, taking time to understand each guest’s needs and creating a positive, welcoming atmosphere that encourages lasting connections with both our customers and the artists we represent.
We're looking for someone who can...
- Stay knowledgeable about all products sold at Union City Market, including local art, gifts, beer, wine, seafood, ice cream, and outdoor gear.
- Assist customers with purchases, ensuring a positive and satisfying shopping experience.
- Accurately process sales transactions using the point of sale (POS) system, including handling cash, credit cards, and gift cards, and using correct codes.
- Complete end-of-day reports and ensure timely, accurate cash drops at Alderbrook Resort & Spa each day.
- Operate the POS system confidently and stay up to date on procedures and system updates.
- Maintain valid food handler’s and alcohol service permits.
- Monitor inventory levels, ensure products are stocked on the floor, and alert the Market Manager when items need to be reordered.
- Package purchases securely to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Set up merchandise displays appropriate to the season and type of product.
- Communicate effectively with the Market Manager about inventory, customer feedback, and any concerns.
- Keep the store clean, safe, and inviting, free of clutter and debris.
- Follow all local and government health regulations related to the handling and sale of food items.
- Ensure pricing aligns with direction and strategy provided by the Market Manager.

Qualifications
- Required | 2 years’ retail experience in farmer’s markets or similar settings
- Desirable | Bachelor’s degree in Arts, History, or related field
- Flexible work availability including weekends required
- Equivalent education, skills, and/or experience necessary to perform the essential functions may be considered
Required Permits & Certifications
- WA Food Worker Card required within 14 days after hire
- WA Class 12/13 Alcohol Server Permit (MAST) required within 60 days after hire
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record required

Collaboration & Engagement
As a Market Attendant, you will work under the direct guidance of the Union City Market Manager. In addition to your home department, you will regularly work with the Banquets and Marina teams. You will not oversee other staff and can expect a significant level of interaction with guests and the public.
Foundational & Prerequisite Skills
- Basic written composition, proofreading & documentation, English (reading and writing), merchandising, general computer use, typing, and identification of food products (by color, shape, texture, smell).
- Intermediate comprehension, safety-consciousness, English (speaking), basic math, and calculating discounts, interest, proportions and volume.
Learn As You Go
- Basic photocopier/scanner/printer use, phone and voicemail systems, oyster shucking for raw bar presentation, and beer and wine knowledge.
- Intermediate point of sale (POS) system proficiency, and café beverage making.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
