The Facilities and Maintenance Director must possess strong technical knowledge in carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and general maintenance, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve facility issues efficiently. The Facilities and Maintenance Director must be familiar with and proficient in the safe operation of all tools and equipment required for the job, including hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and vehicles such as trucks, tractors, and utility vehicles. Leadership experience is essential, including hiring, training, and managing maintenance staff while prioritizing tasks and projects effectively. The Facilities and Maintenance Director must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, including budgeting, project management, and record-keeping, as well as adaptability and problem-solving abilities to address urgent or unexpected needs. Strong communication skills and a commitment to the camp’s mission are critical, ensuring collaboration with program staff and leadership to maintain a safe, functional, and welcoming environment. The candidate must adhere to American Camp Association (ACA), Rhode Island, and federal standards and laws and pass a comprehensive background check. The Facilities and Maintenance Director must be 21 or older and hold a valid driver’s license.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift 50 pounds frequently throughout the day and occasionally heavier items with assistance

  • Role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and working at heights

  • Must have the physical stamina to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, for extended periods of time

  • Involves operating maintenance equipment, hand tools, and vehicles, requiring manual dexterity and coordination

  • Visual and auditory acuity is required to assess safety hazards, complete repairs, and respond to emergencies effectively

  • Traverse uneven dirt roads 

 

Working Conditions:

The Facilities Director will work in a variety of conditions, including both indoor and outdoor environments, across all seasons and weather conditions. This includes exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, and uneven terrain. The role may involve working at heights, in confined spaces, and around potentially hazardous equipment or materials, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols. The position requires flexibility, as responsibilities may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and on-call availability to address urgent maintenance issues or emergencies. Noise levels may vary from quiet office settings to loud environments involving power tools, machinery, and large groups of campers and guests.

 

Expectations:

The Facilities and Maintenance Director is a key year-round staff member responsible for the maintenance of Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center’s grounds and upkeep and cleanliness of the camp’s facilities. The Facilities and Maintenance Director, in conjunction with the Executive Director, is responsible for the planning, communication, oversight, and coordination of all of Aldersgate’s buildings, grounds, equipment, and vehicles. The Facilities Director is an active management team member, coordinating with and supporting other departments when appropriate. 

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  1. Maintenance and Repairs

    1. Oversee daily maintenance and repair of facilities, including cabins, dining halls, restrooms, offices, and recreation areas.

    2. Perform or supervise plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC system repairs.

    3. Ensure all equipment (e.g., kitchen appliances, groundskeeping tools, vehicles) is operational and well-maintained.

    4. Schedule routine inspections and emergency repairs with outside vendors

 

  1. Groundskeeping and Property Management

    1. Maintain the camp's grounds' cleanliness, appearance, and safety, including trails, outdoor activity areas, and landscaping.

    2. Oversee seasonal tasks like mowing, tree removal, snow plowing, and trail maintenance.

    3. Monitor water and waste management systems to meet health and environmental regulations.

 

  1. Safety and Compliance

    1. Conduct regular inspections to ensure buildings, wells,  and equipment meet safety standards, including fire codes, health regulations, and ACA (American Camp Association) accreditation requirements.

    2. Use, maintain, and instruct in the propper use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, boots, etc., for appropriate tasks

    3. Implement and oversee safety protocols for the property, such as emergency procedures and signage.

    4. Work with regulatory agencies to address any compliance issues.

 

  1. Planning and Budgeting

    1. Develop and manage a facilities and operations budget for repairs, supplies, and future projects.

    2. Work with leadership to plan long-term capital improvements (e.g., new buildings, upgrades to infrastructure).

    3. Identify cost-effective solutions to maximize resources while maintaining quality.

 

  1. Leadership and Staff Oversight

    1. Train and supervise maintenance staff, groundskeepers, and seasonal workers.

    2. Delegate tasks and ensure projects are completed efficiently and on time.

    3. Collaborate with the Executive Director and program staff to align facilities work with camp programs and retreat schedules.

 

  1. Guest and Camper Experience

    1. Ensure that facilities are welcoming, clean, and functional to provide a positive guest experience.

    2. Support the program team by setting up and maintaining recreational spaces

    3. Troubleshoot facility-related issues during events, camp sessions, or retreats to minimize disruptions.

Salary : $45,000 - $55,000
