Position: Cultural Preservation Specialist
Status: Non-Exempt, on-call, part-time and full-time possibility depending on candidate
Location: Akutan
Rate of Pay: $26.22 per hour DOE

Job Summary:
Work closely with APIA’s Cultural Heritage Department to plan, coordinate, and implement cultural projects, gatherings and initiatives in Akutan. The Akutan Traditional Council will provide guidance and prioritize, from the list below, which areas this position will focus on. Support, guidance and training will be provided.
Cultural programs/projects and duties may include, based on priorities identified by Akutan Traditional Council:
• Culture Camp: assist planning, organizing, and hosting Akutan Culture Camp and provide assistance with APIA’s Culture Camp.
• Collection’s Care and Preservation: assist with caring for collections held in the community, such as the library/museum, private collections of tribal members (i.e., digitizing photographs), or items at the tribe or at the school
• Language Preservation: participate in APIA’s Regional Language program to learn the language, work to increase fluency and teach other’s what you have learned (when ready). Duties also include: attend weekly meetings and Zoom lessons, participate in language workshops (Summer Language Intensives and Download Camps) participate in regional language teleconferences and teach at the Akutan school (when ready).
• Repatriation: coordinate the return of culturally affiliated items that are held in museums and other institutions. Meet with museum/agency staff to acquire information about cultural items. Act as a liaison to facilitate the return of items that fall under Native American Graves Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Participate in NAGPRA trainings. Travel as needed to museums to conduct research and consult with museum staff. Consult with and report findings to Tribe.
• Cultural Healing Activities: assist with planning and implementing cultural gatherings in the community, which may include teaching cultural arts, crafts, language, or other cultural classes. Provide support to victims of crime, if assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Unangax^ culture experience with knowledge of the Aleutian Pribilof Islands history and region preferred.
2. High School diploma/GED. Administrative support and/or engagement in Unangax^ cultural activities such as art, dance, language, history, or other traditional activities preferred.
3. Knowledge of office practices and procedures with the ability to operate computers, Windows Microsoft programs and basic office equipment with a minimum typing speed of 40 wpm. Database experience a plus.
4. Must be able to plan and prioritize workload.
5. Must be organized and self-initiating with the ability to work independently.
6. Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects with a minimal amount of supervision.
7. Demonstrate maturity, dependability, professionalism, efficiency and competency in performance of assigned duties.
8. Demonstrate good listening skills and have competent oral and written communication skills.
9. Must be neat in personal appearance and attire.
10. Must be punctual.
11. Willing to travel.
