JOB SUMMARY:

To assist the Lead Teacher in a cooperative and supportive role carrying out developmentally appropriate activities. Meeting the overall Head Start goal of increasing the social competence of children and to develop knowledge and pride in the ethnic and cultural background of the children and families.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist in monitoring environment for the activities of the and provide a sage environment by ensuring that children are supervised at all times, both indoors and out; removing unsafe and broken equipment and materials; reporting all safety and health hazards to the lead teacher.
  2. Follow a consistent schedule at the direction of the Lead Teacher which includes small and large group instruction, music and movement and large and small motor activities. Under the direction of the lead teacher: develop and implement daily lesson plans working with individual and/or groups of children. Assist in the preparation and clean-up of activities, meals, special projects, etc.
  3. Assist children in learning appropriate health, dental and personal hygiene by modeling and teaching children skills, such as hand washing after use of the bathroom and before meals, tooth brushing, clean-up after meals, etc.
  4. Use appropriate discipline and guidance techniques, such as re-direction, praise of appropriate behavior and setting acceptable limits. Provide opportunities for children to develop self-mastery skills by planning for children’s success, giving only as much help as needed and praising children’s efforts.
  5. Assist Lead Teacher in providing an atmosphere where children can develop positive self-esteem and pride by incorporative their culture and heritage into everyday classroom activities. Ensure that every family’s ethnic background is represented.
  6. Assist Lead Teacher in providing an atmosphere what promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom.
  7. Function as a member of the APIA Head Start program team by communicating with teacher aides in the other programs, attending meetings and training sessions and participating in frequent teleconferences that are held among the Head Start sites.
  8. Have knowledge of APIA Personnel Policies and Procedures as well as federal and state Head Start guidelines and child care regulations.
  9. In absence of the Lead Teacher, will take over lead teacher job duties and responsibilities.
  10. Must have management skills, ability to problem solve and understand and complete required Head Start administrative paperwork.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned or required by the Head Start Program Coordinator and/or Lead Teacher.
  2. Maintains confidentiality in regards to client, staff and program matters.
  3. Will abide by the APIA Personnel and Head Start Policies and Procedures Manuals as established by the Board of Directors and ensure compliance with Head Start regulations.
