Job description for Mechanical Design Engineer
Alexander & Associates (A&A) is considered a leader in the design of special machines and machine integration. Our current staff is focused on machine design projects including mechanical design, controls system design, information systems and project management. Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Mechanical Design Engineer :
- Take designer’s layout and create 2D draft files of all parts to be able to manufacture details
- Utilizes a fundamental understanding of dimensioning parts
- Generates a tree diagram
- Functionally can use different views and sections in a drawing
- Generates Bill of Material (BOM) for the assembly drawing
- Writes engineering instructions (EI)
- Use and manipulate file types used to manage a design package. Ex: JT, PDF, DXF
- Ability to use 3D software effectively
- Effectively executes appropriate turnover procedures
- Effectively utilize and apply geometric dimension and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Can guide/lead/support Mechanical Detailer’s and check their work
- Calculates stress/load/deflection, can write machine component specifications, size drives, calculate speed and horsepower
- Performs detail design for machine components
- Identify the need to kick off Engineering/Equipment Change Request (ECR) and Engineering Change Authorization (ECA) processes
- Provides construction support for machine and system installations and start up support
- Understands safety requirements of machine design and functionality and ensures issues/questions are raised accordingly
- Has a working knowledge of power & control hardware as it relates to mechanical design
- Has a working knowledge of fluid power systems
- Ability to read and understand technical documentation
- Adheres to the A&A QA System
- Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience for Mechanical Design Engineer:
- Associates degree (A.S.) from College or University
- Or eight to ten years related experience and or training
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Drafting and/or engineering education/experience required
