Performs a range of unskilled manual to skilled trades work in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment. An employee in this class performs a variety of building, and equipment maintenance and repair activities including electrical, heat and air conditioning, carpentry, plumbing and painting. Work is performed in a wide range of unskilled to skilled journey level. Work involves some general unskilled maintenance of buildings and grounds, routine maintenance of appliances and equipment, manual hauling, moving and landscape tasks. Employee works independently requiring sound judgment and initiative and advanced knowledge of trade practices and skills at least at the journey level. Employees are subject to working in inside and outside environments, in extreme cold and hot weather, and hazards in the work including exposures to loud noises, vibrations, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Workers are also subject to work in close quarters such as crawl spaces and small rooms and is subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works/Facilities and is reviewed through conference, inspection, and a review of records.
- Performs journey level trades construction and repair work to buildings, and equipment; troubleshoots problems in response to work orders and determines cause and initiates appropriate repairs.
- Assist in repairing and maintaining interior and exterior lighting; installs and replaces electrical fixtures; repairs electrical connections in heating and air conditioning equipment; installs and repairs switches and outlets; repairs wiring on variety of appliances i.e. refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, ovens, etc.
- Repairs and/or replaces building structures, performs a variety of unskilled to skilled carpentry tasks; hangs, trims, replaces, or repairs doors, cabinets, windows, floors, ceilings, etc.; fabricates or repairs office furniture and cabinets; boards up windows; repairs bookcases, chairs, etc.
- Performs plumbing work; repairs, maintains and replaces plumbing fixtures, unstops drains, installs valves and repairs leaks to plumbing fixtures.
- Assist in changing and repairing electrical motors, controllers, and other electrical equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, tightening doorknobs, repairing and replacing ceiling tiles and toilet paper holders, replacing light fixture covers,
- Arranges for and completes snow and ice removal and requisitions necessary supplies.
- Repairs and installs wallpaper and paints inside and outside building.
- Carries out work according to OSHA and County safety procedures.
- Performs OSHA, ADA, and safety related repairs and changes.
- Completes Work Order documentation, and reports known maintenance and safety issues to supervisor.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of the various building trades at the journey level.
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment, tools, terminology of building maintenance trades.
- Working knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards and related safety precautions in the work.
- Skill in the operation, use and care of various tools and equipment used in the trade work.
- Ability to diagnose and repair problems and plan and organize appropriate corrective action.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to exercise independent initiative.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and other County employees.
- Ability to work in constricted areas.
- Ability to work in extreme hot and cold weather.
- Knowledge of relevant OSHA and County safety policies.
- Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in technical or trade skills and journey level experience in the various building trades; or
- an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possess valid North Carolina driver's license.
