General Statement of Job
The role of a General Maintenance Worker is to oversee general upkeep of the facilities and its infrastructure. They maintain building operations and ensure that the facilities are always safe and functional. General Maintenance Workers can manage technical repairs like inspecting and fixing HVAC systems or general repairs like plumbing issues, painting, trimming bushes and grass on facility grounds. They manage routine maintenance and emergency repairs to prevent and resolve safety or comfort issues.
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required, two-year degree preferred.
- Valid NC driver license with a good driving record.
- 2 years of related experience, preferred.
- Must maintain a current listed and readily available telephone number and be subject to call for service.
- Prompt and regular attendance.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Responsible for making necessary repairs of all district-owned buildings and equipment and maintaining all documentation relating thereto.
- Duties may include basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical and mechanical work.
- Performs minor repairs to lawn and custodial equipment as needed.
- Moves and arranges furniture and equipment.
- Performs a variety of repairs and tasks including and not limited to replacing floor tile, replacing electrical ballasts and fluorescent tubes, painting, fence repair, patching holes in plater or wood walls, patching roofs, preventative maintenance on equipment, pressure washing, indoor & outdoor bleacher repair, grounds and tree maintenance.
- Establish an effective working relationship with the Maintenance Director and other members of the maintenance department; school administrators; and other staff members.
- Complete work in compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as assigned.
- Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working around students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the schools.
- Perform all duties and work assignments in accordance with the district policies and procedures.
- Perform all duties and work assignments in widely varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Perform other duties and tasks as required by the Transportation Director and/or Transportation Assistant Director.
Essential knowledge and abilities
- Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations that interrupt normal daily schedules.
- Must be able to work independently and also together as a team member.
- Must be physically able to operate mechanical equipment. Must have a minimal level of eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform medium physical work.
- The employee will regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently move up to 100 pounds.
- The employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; climb; crawl; kneel; crouch.
- Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
- Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, or directions from superiors.
- Requires the ability to read simple forms and prepare maintenance reports using prescribed format.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment.
- Ability to weld as needed.
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
