The Deputy Court Clerk is a vital member of the staff of the Alexandria Clerk of the Circuit Court. The Clerk of the Circuit Court is an elected constitutional officer of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Clerk’s office is responsible for hundreds of duties related to the Circuit Court, and for providing many other critical services to the citizens and residents of the City and the Commonwealth. Deputy Court Clerks are public servants who daily help their fellow citizens in many important ways.
The Deputy Court Clerk performs a variety of duties related to the functioning of the Circuit Court and to other important legal matters. These include, for example, issuing marriage and other licenses, reviewing and processing court filings in both civil and criminal cases, administering oaths, receiving and properly handling payments for court fees and fines, preparing court orders, and reviewing and recording documents related to real property transactions. The Deputy Court Clerk also receives, screens and responds to inquiries by mail, telephone, e-mail, and in-person at a service counter, providing information and assistance to the public, private attorneys, Commonwealth’s Attorneys, Public Defenders, law enforcement personnel, court personnel, City officials and others. The Deputy Court Clerk organizes and maintains critical permanent records of the Court and City of Alexandria. The position requires independent judgement, discretion and initiative in completing assignments, and also requires considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public.
High school graduate or equivalent required, some college preferred. Candidates subject to background check prior to offer of employment.
