POSITION SUMMARY

The Applications Specialist is responsible for identifying opportunities and developing solutions for CNC machining processes; process quality, cycle time improvements, revision changes, set-up repeatability and flexibility for cells. This position is also responsible for assisting in the training of machine shop operators and set-up employees.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following description of work to be performed by this individual is not intended to be all-inclusive. Rather, it focuses on the major tasks that must be accomplished.

  • Exhibit active leadership in order to model and support the company’s vision and strategies
  • Provide and promote a safe work environment throughout the entire facility by following all safety programs and policies
  • Partner with various team leaders and departments to continuously analyze and ensure the quality of CNC machining, Robotics and Fabrication processes meets customer and company standards
  • Develop, implement, and approve CNC machining programs and processes for a variety of specialized CNC machines; Handtmann, MMC, CNC Bender, etc.
    • Complete set up sheets
      • Document machine cycles
      • Document set-up instructions
    • Assist with first time part process set-ups
    • Keep CAM files up to date with machine programs
    • Work with Quality Assurance Technicians on inspection methods
    • Approve process capability
    • Develop a flexible, repeatable set-up
    • Communicate with the customer support team (QROCs) on changes and results
  • Develop and implement robotic processes in support of manufacturing process:
    • Provide robotic support for production operations corporate wide
    • Install and program new work cells and robots
    • Focus on continuous improvements for all robotic processes
    • Up to date and accurate documents and records
    • Developing, setting up, and training of PM programs for maintenance
    • Standardized robotic training to be used corporate wide
      • Program storage
      • Best practices
      • Programming software
    • Develop/Approve fabrication processes for assigned projects to include all of fab areas
      • Assist with first time part process set-ups
      • Complete set up sheets

        • Document set-up instructions
      • Work with Quality Assurance Technicians on inspection methods
      • Approve process capability
      • Develop a flexible, repeatable set-up
      • Communicate with the customer support team (QROCs) on changes and result

 

  • Work with the Tooling department and machine improvement technicians to determine best possible solutions to trouble shoot CNC machining processes
  • Complete revision changes to CNC machining processes
    • Program part changes
    • Work with the Tooling department and Machine Shop on changes
    • Maintain CAM file accuracy
    • Maintain CAD file accuracy
  • Make machining/fabrication process improvements as needed
    • Analyze tool life and quality opportunities
    • Work with Applications group on cutting tool testing
    • Work with Tooling group on tooling improvements

Assist in development and monitoring of set-up times and research new ways to decrease set-up time

OTHER JOB DUTIES (Not considered essential to the job)

Perform all other related assignments (including special projects) as required in a professional and cooperative manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education:
    • Associates degree in Machine Tool Technology required
  2. Experience:
    • 5 years of CNC machine set-up and programming experience preferred
    • MMC, Robot and 5 axis machining experience desired
    • 5 years of manufacturing experience desired
  3. Other required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Suite)
    • Knowledge of programming software (CAD, SolidCAM, SurfCAM, OPUS)
    • Ability to recognize safety concerns
    • Strong coordination and judgment skills
    • Advanced math skills
    • Ability to effectively work in a team environment
    • Strong communication skills
    • Ability to quickly problem solve
    • Ability to multi-task
    • Strong blueprint reading skills with a good understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
    • Ability to utilize the proper inspection equipment
    • Knowledge of Brown and Sharpe coordinate measuring machine (CMM)
    • Knowledge of Makino MMC software
    • Knowledge of MMC concepts
    • Knowledge of Robotic concepts
    • Knowledge of Robotic programming
    • Knowledge of 5 axis machining
    • Knowledge of CNC machine capabilities
    • Knowledge of manual programming

  • Office equipment (computer, phone, printer, scanner, copier and fax machine)

  • Cutting tools and holders
  • Hand tools (torque wrenches, allen wrenches)

Inspection equipment (CMMs, RayTech, surface plates, length measuring devices, calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gages, gage blocks, pins)
