What are the responsibilities and job description for the Branch Circulation Supervisor (Library Assistant III) position at Alexandria Library?
The Alexandria Library is looking for enthusiastic individuals to lead its Branch Circulation Teams. The ideal candidate(s) will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to develop new staffing and service models. Under the direction of the Branch Manager, the Branch Circulation Supervisor (Library Assistant III) assists in development of library circulation policies and procedures, while managing the circulation sections of the branch library.
Management Duties:
- Provides vision and leadership for Circulation services at a branch library, to include planning and coordinating initiatives and services.
- Schedules employees, approves leave requests, assigns work and special projects, reviews performance and completes annual evaluations, monitors and approves time records, provides ongoing training and feedback regarding performance and contributes to annual and long-term goals and priorities;
- Coordinates system-wide circulation initiatives with the Central Library’s Library Operations Supervisor and other branch circulation managers;
- Facilitates, plans and attends monthly meetings with the Central Library’s Library Operations Supervisor and other branch circulation managers to resolve system-wide issues and develop new circulation policies and procedures;
- Implements and evaluates new circulation policies and procedures;
- Oversees and manages meeting and conference room requests, inventory and repair of library materials;
- Conducts regular meetings with circulation staff;
- Meets with other division staff to recommend goals and events plus coordinate work;
- Open and close facilities, i.e., re-securing building during, closed hours; preparing daily cash receipts for transfer and reconciling discrepancies;
- Ensures that circulation policies and procedures are consistent, to resolve system-wide issues and to coordinate new initiatives.
- Participates in committees that develop new library services;
- Resolves sensitive account issues and to explain library policies and procedures to patrons; Performs related work as required.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must be able to travel between Alexandria Library Branches on a regular basis.
- Management and supervisory skills, including team building, time management, and planning.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Extensive knowledge of technology including digital services, integrated library systems, and online databases.
- Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing library environment.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff.

- Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, with the library’s business contacts, and with other staff.
Minimum Requirements:
Thorough knowledge of paraprofessional library methods, procedures and practices; thorough knowledge of how to operate and effectively utilize the integrated library system, databases and specialized computer programs; good knowledge of books, authors, and other resources available in the library; ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others; ability to effectively train others; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions; ability to deal with patrons under stressful conditions; ability to exercise tact, good judgment and initiative; ability to work independently within established policies, procedures, and guidelines; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and patrons; ability to provide guidance and assistance to subordinates and to schedule staff coverage; and ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Salary: $49,125 - $82,333
Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the staffing needs of the library, and will include days, evenings, rotating Saturdays, and occasional Sundays at one of the three (3) Library branches.
