Title: Clerk/Library Assistant
Reports to: Library Director
Job Classification: Part time staff member; Includes days, nights, Non-Exempt; Salary Range: $11.70/ hour starting pay, then follows our Pay Table for Length of Service; Holiday Pay; OPERS Retirement
Job Summary: Aid patrons in borrowing and using library materials, services, and equipment; plan and implement Elementary aged children's programs and aid with other programs as needed; organize, plan, and create library displays; and aid patrons with reader's advisory information as appropriate.
Essential Duties:
- Provide exemplary customer service to customers by answering directional and reference questions, locating materials, processing hold requests, monitoring behavior of library users, and ensuring the library is neat and orderly.
- Perform clerical duties common to a library environment including: checking in/out materials, issuing library cards, collecting fines, charge payment for lost or damaged items, answering the telephone, renewing materials, etc.
- Enforce library policy and procedures, provide direction, and problem solving.
- Plan and present library programs for youth, specifically Elementary aged children. Implementation will be alone and/or with other staff members.
- Instruct and assist customers in how to use library equipment.
- Knowledge of available resources related to technology, including equipment, devices, social media, library website, and other digital content and audiovisual material that are offered by the library.
- Prepare for opening and closing by turning on/off lights and equipment.
- Organize, plan, and create library displays.
- All other duties as assigned.
General Requirements: Along with the commitment and desire to provide excellent service to library customers, all Alger Public Library employees must have the ability to maintain predictable and regular attendance, work a flexible schedule including daytime, evening, communicate, and follow library policy and procedure and develop and maintain positive working relationships with all internal and external customers. All employees must be able to understand library wide operations, satisfactorily perform all the responsibilities associated with a specific job title and meet the physical requirements of the same job. All employees must have the ability to alphabetize and perform basic math operations. In addition, all employees must have the ability to work according to the priorities as established by library administration and/or the library board of trustees and to adapt to change as necessary.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Must be eligible for lawful employment in the U.S.
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Must successfully pass a background check
