Position Description & Expectations
- Stop at all stops on the route and report any delays or deviations in schedule to the Director of Transportation
- Be attentive to traffic and weather conditions while staying on schedule and ensuring the safety of passengers
- Ensure that your vehicle is operating properly each day by testing brakes, tires and other components
- Maintain a safe environment on the school bus by enforcing rules of conduct and responding to emergencies
- Report any unsafe environment to the Director of Transportation immediately
- Keep track of the number of students transported, to report to supervisor daily
- Ensure that students in 2nd grade and all lower grades are being picked up at stops by a parent/guardian
- Disinfect and sanitize high touch areas at the end of each route and/or field trip run to minimize exposure against diseases and infections
- Researches and suggest purchases for any equipment needed for the school bus /or materials needed for compliance with all the existing policies and procedures
- Resolves daily operational problems and emergencies while coordinating with the Director of Transportation on complex issues for timely resolutions
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with parents, schools, and departments, while coordinating with the Director of Transportation, school, and parents on resolves concerns with scheduling and route development continuously
- Attend in-services and training for transportation safety, which includes conducting a mock evacuation and emergency drills
- Coordinates to prepare for annual state bus inspections and resolving any inspection issues
- Collaborates with departments, local and state agencies, and organizations relating to pupil transportation
- Reports accidents and other issues associated with student transportation immediately to the Director of Transportation
- Ability to work well under pressure and use sound judgment, including appropriate handling of confidential matters
Qualifications
- Must have least three (3) years in school transportation operations, preferred
- Must possess a valid CDL license with a school bus endorsement and with a "P" Endorsement, required
- Valid certifications in First Aid and CPR, or have the ability to obtain these certifications within 60 days of hire, preferred
- Knowledgeable of school law in accordance with Louisiana statutes, and consults with leadership during times of uncertainty
- Proactively approaches others with a view to engaging in dialogue and building strong working relationships
- Effective written and oral communications skills
- Must be well organized and have impeccable time management skills
- Must possess a valid City of New Orleans bus driver certificate issued by the Department of Safety and Permits, preferred

- Ability to stand, walk, and sit frequently or for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, crouch, reach, talk, hear conversations, and near/far visual acuity, depth perception with color vision with a wide field of vision function
- Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds with exposure to petroleum fumes and work occasionally outside
- Ability to work evening and/or weekend hours when necessary
