What Success Means In This Position
The School Counselor is an exempt level position. This position is responsible for coordinating and implementing services that provide ongoing individual, small group, and large group counseling services in the areas of academic advisement, social/personal growth, career awareness, and parent outreach.

Position Description & Expectations
  • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals
  • Assist all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career, and personal/social skills, goals and plans
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and school staff to assist students with educational and career planning
  • Consults with administrators, teachers, parents and SSC in identifying and resolving student’s issues, needs, and concerns.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns
  • Implement an effective referral and follow-up process
  • Provide appropriate information to staff related to the comprehensive school counseling program
  • Participate and actively seek professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills
  • Assist site leaders in developing the school’s master schedule
  • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession
  • Monitor student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assists with appropriate interventions
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications
  • Louisiana certification as a Counselor, with at least three (3) years prior successful teaching experience on the elementary or secondary level.
  • Master’s degree in school counseling from a regionally accredited college or university approved by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP); and
  • practicum/internship requirements: a. a practicum in school counseling to include 100 contacts hours in a school setting; or b. an internship in school counseling to include 600 contact hours in a school setting;
  • Completion of the PRAXIS examination in school guidance and counseling (0421 or 5421).
  • State Certification as a Licensed Professional Counselor

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Ability to work off ladders to a height of 30 ft.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 60 pounds.
  • Ability to work evening and/or weekend hours when necessary.

  • May work prolonged or irregular hours.
  • Frequent district wide travel; occasional statewide or out-of-state travel.
