GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):

The Social Studies Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops students’ knowledge of history, civics, economics, and geography, while fostering critical thinking, civic responsibility, and effective communication. The teacher promotes inquiry, analysis, and discussion of diverse perspectives to prepare students for engaged citizenship and lifelong learning.

 

This position will begin on May 5 and will continue through to the end of the school year, on June 17. The classes this individual will teach are US History I (4 sections) and Criminal Justice in America (1 section).

QUALIFICATIONS:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • MA DESE license: History, 8-12
  • Knowledge of second-language acquisition 
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use technology effectively

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master’s Degree or significant post-graduate coursework in History or Social Studies


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):

  

  • Teaches content and skills in history, including historical inquiry, analysis, and interpretation, using curriculum designated by the District.
  • Prepares and adapts instructional materials and methods to develop relevant, sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students to think critically about the past and its connection to the present.
  • Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the MA frameworks and district curricula; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students. 
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary. 
  • Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.  
  • Evaluates each student’s progress in meeting the course standards.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. 
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health and attitude problems. 
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress. 
  • Supervises students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities. 
  • Administers testing in accordance with school and state testing practices. 
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required for supervision and instruction of the students;
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Work Environment:  

Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day; however, there may be occasions for after-school meetings.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear.  The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel.  The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.  Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.
