Job Description: Spring Musical Director - Middle School

Alice Deal Middle School in Northwest DC is seeking a dynamic and experienced director to lead our middle school spring musical production for the 2025 season. This is a unique opportunity to work with a diverse group of students and help bring a high-quality musical to life.

Position Overview:
The Spring Musical Director will be responsible for overseeing the full production process, from auditions to the final performance, working with a cast of approximately 75 students. The director will guide and support middle school students in developing their performance skills, fostering teamwork, and ensuring a positive, creative experience for all involved.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct rehearsals and manage the overall artistic vision for the musical production.
  • Collaborate with choreographers, vocal coaches, set designers, and other production team members.
  • Work with middle school students (grades 6-8), developing their acting, singing, and dance abilities.
  • Conduct auditions and cast roles based on students’ skills and performance.
  • Create and maintain a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students involved in the production.
  • Coordinate with parents, volunteers, and the school principal to ensure the smooth operation of rehearsals, performances, and backstage activities.
  • Communicate regularly with the parent producers, school administration, and production team regarding rehearsal schedules, performance details, and any other necessary updates.
  • Hold an audition workshop on March 5 and 6, 2025, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, and a Q&A session on March 4, 2025, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM.
  • Facilitate auditions on March 10 and 11, 2025, and callbacks on March 12 and 13, 2025.
  • Conduct first full cast rehearsal on March 14, 2025.
  • Prepare students for three performances at the end of the season.

Important Dates:

  • The school will be closed for spring break, April 14 - 18, 2025, with no rehearsals during this time.

Job Requirements:

  • Previous experience directing middle school musicals or theater programs.
  • Strong understanding of working with young performers in a school environment.
  • Ability to manage a large group of students.
  • Experience in music and/or theater production, including staging, blocking, and coaching.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to motivate and engage middle school students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and parent volunteers.
  • Must be available for the full rehearsal period, March 1 through May 31, Monday through Friday, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

Compensation:

  • Stipend: $6,000 for the duration of the contract (March 1 - May 31); negotiable based on experience
