Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is seeking experienced, motivated, and dedicated leaders and educators to participate in the design and delivery of an innovative four-year medical school curriculum that engages medical students in active and novel learning.

Director of Development

About The Position

The Director of Development provides strategic and operational management of the Alice Walton School of Medicine private giving initiatives. The Director is responsible for building the infrastructure for the fundraising program. In collaboration with the Medical School’s leadership, the Director is responsible for managing philanthropic support through individual, corporate, and foundation major gifts that advance the medical school’s vision and mission. The Director maintains a portfolio of active prospects and is responsible for the solicitation of these prospects. The ideal candidate possesses proven leadership and management skills, a successful track record medical school fundraising including donor relations, portfolio management, and alumni relations.

This position reports directly to the Founding Dean & CEO of the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to The Position:

  • Serves as subject matter expert for philanthropy at the medical school. Ensures that fundraising efforts reflect the organization’s values, mission, vision and plans.
  • Develops and executes comprehensive major giving strategies to achieve annual fundraising goals.
  • In collaboration with internal constituents, oversees the development and implementation of tailored solicitation plans for major gift prospects which will require personal contact and travel.
  • Superior ability to identify, comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex written materials, situations and concepts within the medical education field.
  • Participates in division budgeting and produces monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Plans, develops, implements, and manages departmental budget
  • Routinely monitors and analyzes fundraising metrics. Utilizes data driven insights to adjust strategies and enhance fundraising outcomes.
  • Creates a strategic plan for an alumni giving program.
  • Ensures a high degree of data integrity, confidentiality and efficiency for the management of donor and member records, proposals, recognition program, reporting, project management, and other related processes.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintains accountability standards to donors and ensures compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of conduct for fundraising professionals.
  • Remains informed of best practices in the field of non-profit fundraising.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate computer applications and the ability to produce correspondence, reports and newsletters.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.
  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Preferred education: Master's Degree

Required Work Experience, Qualifications, Skills, And Abilities

  • Minimum experience: 10 years
  • Proven record in donor relations, campaigns, and private gift fundraising.
  • Proven track record in annual and individual giving, including experience with major gift solicitation and donor stewardship.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire high-net-worth individuals.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Demonstrated growth in fundraising revenue in roles with progressive responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage in a complex organization and plan strategically with high-level faculty, administrators and volunteers.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising concepts, techniques and procedures.
  • Preferred experience with campaigns.
  • Proven ability to engage productively at the most senior level on challenges facing academic and healthcare systems beyond her/his responsibility.
  • Demonstrated success building relationships with diverse constituencies and stakeholders.
  • A leader who embodies responsible planning/management of funds and can build long-term, meaningful relationships with donors and the community.
  • An innovative leader who has demonstrated success with building and managing a program in support of the mission and values of the organization.
  • A leader who possesses an entrepreneurial spirit to develop and execute a strategic vision.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.

Preferred Work Experience And Qualifications

  • Service or Experience in Medical School or Higher Education
  • Experience in building a framework for new development program.
  • Preferred Experience: Skilled in managing and leading within a complex matrix environment while inspiring diverse, multifaceted teams. Demonstrates a relationship-focused approach with proven expertise in metric-driven accountability.

About Us

Founded in 2021, Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a nonprofit, four-year MD program enhancing traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles. The School’s culture embraces self-care to empower students to care for their own well-being as well as their patients’. The School’s state-of-the-art medical education facility is under construction in Bentonville, Arkansas on the Crystal Bridges campus, home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Heartland Whole Health Institute. The School has been granted preliminary accreditation status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

All six areas of the curriculum will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum.
