About Us

Founded in 2021, Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a nonprofit, four-year MD program enhancing traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles. The School’s culture embraces self-care to empower students to care for their own well-being as well as their patients’. The School’s state-of-the-art medical education facility is under construction in Bentonville, Arkansas on the Crystal Bridges campus, home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Heartland Whole Health Institute. The School has been granted preliminary accreditation status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

What We Seek

We are building a cadre of medical professionals trained in conventional medicine and in whole health, by reimagining medical education. We seek leaders and faculty who are excited by this endeavor. Faculty and staff members will contribute to the development and rollout of the ARCHES curriculum, which is built on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. It includes the following six core elements:

  • Clinical
  • Health Systems Science
  • Embracing Whole Health
  • Science of Medicine

All six areas of the curriculum will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum.

About The Position

The Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a senior leadership position responsible for driving the strategic planning and oversight of the school’s clinical enterprise. This role focuses on developing and managing partnerships with clinical affiliates to promote excellence in education, research, and patient care while ensuring adherence to best practices and accreditation standards. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with faculty and leadership to enhance residency programs, expanding clinical faculty recruitment efforts, and managing the AWSOM Faculty Practice Plan. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in medical education, clinical practice, and academic leadership, along with a commitment to diversity and innovation in healthcare education.

Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is seeking experienced, motivated, and dedicated leaders and educators to participate in the design and delivery of an innovative four-year medical school curriculum that engages medical students in active and novel learning.

This position is open at the Associate Professor or Professor level within the non-tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications. While AWSOM does not have a tenure track, we are building a school that will facilitate exceptional professional development opportunities for our faculty.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

  • Provide executive level leadership focused on strategic planning and the development and maintenance of partnerships with clinical affiliates to support clinical, educational, and research excellence.
  • Provide strategic leadership, oversight, and management of the school's clinical chairs.
  • Establish and maintain partnership with clinical affiliates, in collaboration with legal counsel.
  • Provide oversight of all AWSOM clinical activities to track adherence to best practices in patient care, safety, and quality improvement, credentialing, peer review, and scope of practice.
  • Maintain quality assessment and assurance levels for clinical enterprise as it relates to school, faculty, and partnerships.
  • Monitor and provide guidance on clinical research.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs
  • Work collaboratively with Medical Leadership of clinical affiliates.
  • Serve on the Medical Executive Committees of primary clinical affiliates, clinical affiliate education committees, GMEC(s), quality boards, etc. as appropriate.
  • Participate in CQI for accreditation readiness.
  • Lead collaborative efforts to increase residency programs with clinical affiliates, working with all stakeholders including legislators and hospital leadership.
  • Collaborate with the Heartland Whole Health Institute to align clinical scholarship and innovation with AWSOM objectives.
  • Lead recruitment efforts for clinical faculty in collaboration with clinical affiliates.
  • Collaborate with Dean’s Cabinet to build AWSOM Faculty Practice Plan.
  • Monitor and oversee AWSOM Faculty Practice Plan and continually evaluate emerging models of clinical practice for adoption.
  • Report to the Executive Vice Dean.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree
  • Board certification
  • FTE up to 1.0, negotiable

Minimum Work Experience

  • Experience with undergraduate or graduate medical education
  • Experience in medical practice
  • Experience developing and/or working within an academic medical center
  • Experience with faculty professional development
  • Expertise in funding models for clinical education and training
  • Experience in effective communication to governance and leadership
  • Demonstrated excellent patient care skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships; effective negotiation skills
  • Ability to effectively mentor individuals, including both faculty members and students
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness and ability to work with varied groups of educators and stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten or more years of experience in medical practice or hospital setting
  • Proven Medical School, or hospital setting leadership position(s)
  • Additional training or certification in health sciences education
  • Proven accomplishments in UME, GME, and research or scholarly activity
  • Comfort with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies for UME, GME, and faculty development
  • Strong commitment to self-care
