2025-2026 Dyslexia Specialist Itinerant (2 positions available) @ Central Special Education

Primary Purpose:

Implement district dyslexia program at multiple campuses by ensuring that federal, state and district policies/guidelines are implemented and in compliance. Ensuring screening, identification, and development of structures and support for students at risk and identified with dyslexia. Additionally, work with campus staff to ensure interventions and accommodations are implemented at multiple campuses assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Texas certification standards required for assignment as set by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)
  • Meet NCLB Highly Qualified criteria as required by assignment
  • ESL certification preferred or ESL certification required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year
  • Special Education certification preferred or required within 1 year of employment
  • Bilingual certification preferred
  • Dyslexia Teacher or Specialist experience preferred

 

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of reading, math, and dyslexia instruction across grade levels
  • The dyslexia referral and assessment process for Dyslexia services
  • Strong knowledge of the RtI/MTSS/504/IDEA referral process
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting
  • Understanding of technology and instructional software to support diverse learners
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Supportive of district initiatives
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups of professionals and individuals
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior in a constructive and positive manner
  • Exemplary organizational skills

Experience:

  • Three (3) years successful teaching or interventionist experience preferred
  • Two (2) years successful Dyslexia Teacher or Specialist experience preferred

Program Management

  • Implement district dyslexia program on multiple campuses assigned to ensure that federal, state, & district policies/guidelines are followed and in compliance
  • Provide direct services at multiple campuses in dyslexia/dysgraphia.
  • Effectively manage time and schedules to optimize instruction and intervention opportunities for students with dyslexia.
  • Participate as a member of the MTSS committee and ensure that all committee documentation is accurately maintained at the designated campuses.
  • Serve as an active member of the special education multi-disciplinary evaluation committee
  • Complete any additional training requirements for the position within one year, in accordance with the latest Dyslexia Handbook.
  • Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and collaborate with campus staff to create Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) statements, annual IEP goals and objectives, and specially designed instruction for students with dyslexia and related disorders.
  • Assume responsibility for instructional materials and equipment inventoried to the dyslexia teacher and the assigned schools.
  • Ensure accurate, complete and correct documentation requirements are completed in a timely manner as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Provide support to 504 Campus Contacts in meeting child find requirements, determining eligibility, and ensuring full compliance.
  • Collaborate with campus administration and other providers of dyslexia intervention in planning and implementing instructional support and services for students with dyslexia and related disorders.
  • Collaborate with campus administration in the planning, implementation, and training for instructional support of students involved in the MTSS process, as well as those identified with dyslexia and related disorders.
  • Attend district and campus meetings to receive training on methods and strategies that improve general reading and dyslexia instruction as well as outcomes for students with dyslexia.
  • Assist the department with initial and ongoing professional development for campus staff, parents, and guardians on dyslexia and early intervention topics.
  • Support dyslexia screening process at all grade levels, as needed.
  • Travel among schools is required.

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation

Performance of Itinerant Dyslexia Specialists will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Professional Non-Supervisor Personnel.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; possible district wide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

Probationary contract – 187 days plus 4 days of Alief U professional development for a teacher new to the district  

2025-2026 Salary Schedule  

Minimum teacher salary is $64,100 

2025-2026 Teacher Salary Schedule 

Salary is based on 187 days. If working less than 187 days, the salary will be less. 

  

Certified teacher sign-on bonus: 

Certified Teacher - Any field - $4,000 

Special Education Teacher (Self-Contained Assignment) - $5,000 

Bilingual Certified Teacher - $5,000 

Certified Teacher with existing TIA Designation - $8,000 

Bonus payment delivered in two (2) installments-50% (9/30/25), 50% (9/30/26) 

Sign-on Bonus eligibility ends July 17, 2025
