Primary Purpose:
Specializes in problem solving and is considered the “mediator” for any organization within the school district. Conducts research and interprets, plans, develops and implements strategies for organizational development. Acts as the liaison or agent among managers, supervisors and employees in an official environment.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- College degree from an accredited college or university, preferred
- Master Peace Officer Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Broad experience in field operations and administration and have demonstrated modern management skills and abilities
- Strong customer service philosophy as a means of fostering a balanced and sustainable community
- Strong communications skills and a positive team-oriented attitude.
- Ability to speak and write English clearly and concisely
- Skilled public speaker and able to interact with employees and citizens at all levels
- Willingly accept any and all other duties assigned
Experience:
- Fifteen (15) or more consecutive years of experience preferred as a full time licensed police officer
- Current AISD Police Department supervisor
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Department Management
- Evaluate and analyze the accomplishments of department’s goals and objectives.
- Conduct research and quantify programs.
- Anticipate problems and have proactive thinking to prevent overreactions.
Law Enforcement
- Respond as a leader in situations requiring use of sound judgment and decisive actions.
- Perform duties efficiently with a minimum of supervision.
- Conduct external investigations and reports of misconduct on officers under your supervision and make recommendations for any actions as necessary.
- Interact with outside agencies as well as district personnel in a supervisory capacity so as to ensure an environment as enumerated in the Departments Mission Statement.
- Respond to calls for service as requested.
- Collect evidence as necessary supporting any investigations.
- Patrol and check all district facilities when needed.
- Enforce all city, state, and federal laws and apprehend offenders.
- File appropriate criminal charges as applicable.
- Investigate motor vehicle, bus and other accidents when needed.
- Assist with after hour events as needed.
- Assist other police agencies concerning criminal investigations when requested.
- Stop and identify suspicious persons and/or vehicles on district property.
- Take such actions within the guidelines set forth in the Police department Policy and Procedures Manual as the police officer deems reasonably necessary to fulfill the objectives as set forth in the Procedures Manual.
- Write effective legal incident reports and testify in court as needed.
- Be aware of recent court rulings pertaining to police activity and ensure compliance of district police officers.
Safety
- Help provide traffic control at athletic events, school closings or openings, or at any other time as needed
- Provide protection to or escort district personnel as needed.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Personnel Management
- Assure that subordinate employees have a clear sense of what is expected and participates in open two-way communication.
- Develop skills of others and fairly evaluate the effectiveness of subordinates and the organization.
- Supervise and evaluate all police officers and civilian employees for job performance, appearance, human relations interactions and timely response to calls for service.
- Oversee district extra duty events, shift scheduling for officers and coordinating requests for time off.
- Set priorities, coordinate and schedule tasks or events in a logical manner to maximize staff and material resources and increase efficiency.
- Act on police department personnel issues on an emergency basis in the absence of the Chief of Police or the Captain.
Administration
- Assist with coordination of vehicles and equipment maintenance and repair as needed.
- Assist with maintaining property room for storage of weapons, contraband, and other items confiscated on district property.
- Speak in a clear and understandable manner so that listeners will grasp the message being delivered.
- Keep up-to-date on knowledge and training in community oriented policing, problem solving techniques, criminal investigations, case management, program development and project management.
- Continue training to stay up-to-date with computers, automated records systems, spreadsheets and databases.
Other
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise and evaluate assigned police department employees.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Professional Supervisor Personnel.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: District vehicle, firearm, handcuffs, alarm system, security equipment, two-way radio, alarm system and other security equipment, fire extinguisher, and standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing
Motion: Strenuous walking and climbing; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent driving
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (15 - 44 pounds)
Environment: Work inside and outside (moderate exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather). Frequent districtwide travel
Other: Specific hearing and visual requirements. Requires sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, hand-eye-foot coordination, hearing and vision to perform all essential functions of the classification, including ability to react quickly and effectively to emergency situations. May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions, including violent and armed confrontations. Ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; prolonged hours; on call 24 hours a day.
