Orientation and Mobility Specialist @ Central Special Education

Primary Purpose:

To provide direct, indirect and consultative services to students with visual impairments including evaluation and plan development.  Direct services may include recommendations and training to assist students to travel safely, efficiently and independently across settings. 

Qualifications:                                                              

Education/Certification:

• Bachelor’s degree
• ACVREP Professional certification

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Effective communication, human relations and leadership skills
• Demonstrates knowledge in special education law, policies and procedures
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both orally and in writing
• Proficient in use of digital tools including Google Suite, Microsoft 365 ARD/IEP Software and Learning Management Systems

Experience:

• Successful experience with school-aged children, including infants and preschoolers with multiple impairments

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Management

• Provide comprehensive orientation and mobility evaluations and functional vision assessments of visually handicapped students and prepare a report of findings and recommendations for appropriate school personnel.
• Design and implement instructional programs to develop orientation and mobility skills for those students who qualify for services; such as, tactile maps, models, optical devices, pre-canes, GPS devices, and long canes for the development of O&M skills.
• Provide orientation of new buildings and new class schedules to students with visual impairments as needed, including those community settings where students receive instruction.
• Participate as a member of appropriate Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee and assist in developing and reviewing student Individual Educational Plans according to Texas Education Agency guidelines.
• Provide consultative assistance, support and training in orientation and mobility concepts and skills to district personnel and parents upon request.
• Provide staff development workshops to school district personnel at the district and regional level.
• Develop written materials to support consultative and direct service activities.

Other

• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
• Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Professional Non-Supervisor Personnel.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district wide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
