DESCRIPTION
The Lead Ophthalmic & Surgical Technician is a key clinical and surgical team member, providing hands-on patient care while overseeing daily operations and supporting the development of the technician team. This role ensures excellence in ophthalmic and surgical procedures, optimizes workflow efficiency, and fosters a culture of teamwork and professionalism. In addition to performing ophthalmic and surgical duties, the Lead Technician provides mentorship, training, and operational leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership Duties
- Oversee the daily workflow of the ophthalmic and surgical technician team, ensuring efficiency and adherence to protocols.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for technician-related concerns and workflow improvements.
- Train, mentor, and support new and existing technicians, fostering professional growth and skill development.
- Ensure compliance with clinical and surgical safety protocols, infection control standards, and best practices.
- Monitor inventory of ophthalmic and surgical supplies, ensuring availability and proper stock levels.
- Collaborate with leadership and providers to implement process improvements and optimize patient flow.
- Address patient concerns and escalate issues as needed to ensure a positive patient experience.
- Conduct regular performance check-ins with technicians, providing feedback and guidance.
- Assist with scheduling and coverage planning to ensure adequate staffing levels.
This role requires strong clinical expertise, leadership skills, and a proactive approach to patient care and team management. The Lead Ophthalmic & Surgical Technician must be adaptable, solutions-oriented, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
Ophthalmic Duties
- Gather medical records and patient information utilizing an EMR (currently Modernizing Medicine).
- Provide exemplary patient service and education.
- Perform diagnostic ocular tests and measurements, such as visual field testing, OCT, topography, and tonometry.
- Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Assist the ophthalmologist and optometrist in examinations and minor in-office procedures.
- Greet patients, answer phones, and schedule appointments.
Surgical Duties
- Prepare surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment before procedures.
- Assist the surgeon during ophthalmic surgeries by passing instruments, handling sterile supplies, and ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques.
- Monitor and support patients preoperatively and postoperatively.
- Ensure proper sterilization and maintenance of surgical instruments.
- Maintain accurate surgical logs and documentation.
- Assist with room setup and breakdown for surgical procedures.
- Coordinate with surgical teams to ensure efficiency and patient safety.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Previous technician experience required.
- Previous experience in the optometry field required.
- Previous medical experience preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of leadership experience required.
- HS Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred

*While this position is in Des Moines, training will be completed in Omaha, NE.
