Description
The school social worker assists students with social and emotional learning based on existing need as a related service for students with an IEP. Service to students is typically through direct therapy to support school and social success, but also part of a problem-solving and intervention team for students.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide social work/counseling services through direct, group or consult services.
- Manage evaluations, goals, and appropriately enter and exit students with minutes on the IEP for Social Work (SW) or Counseling services.
- Maintain a schedule that ensures all students are receiving social work/counseling services based on IEP.
- Attend annual IEPs, placements, evaluations, or manifestations and participate as an active IEP team member for all students as assigned, including behavior meetings and consultation for SEL of students; which includes writing social emotional goals for IEPs when needed.
- Identify and utilize evidence based practices to increase academic and social/emotional success.
- Promote and support students’ feelings of physical safety and connectedness to the school.
- Provides services that demonstrate respect for diverse (e.g. race, ethnicity, disability, faith, sexual orientation) populations.
- Provides a variety of methods and techniques to address problems encountered by students, while ensuring fidelity of programs and services
- Active participant in STARS.
- ADT (Autism Diagnostic Team) member which includes but not limited to classroom observations and screening, autism diagnostic evaluations with a team, and recommendations/consultations to providers.
- Implement crisis intervention, if required, to a student on caseload.
- Present to school staff regarding SEL, de-escalation, NME, mental health and other topics as requested.
- Provide consultation as requested by administrators or staff regarding SEL or mental health.
- Participate in SIT as requested by school or in regards to SEL for a specific student.
- Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. activity logs, correspondence, memos, intervention strategies, Medicaid billing, reports, required documentation, etc) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
- Identify, understand and initiate state statutes, district expectations, and national standards in the area of social work and special education.
- Other essential functions: Energetic, caring, leadership skills, communication skills, ability to collaborate.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
- Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
- Must be able to work in a variety of noisy and crowded environments.
- Must be able to demonstrate effective organizational skills and work with a deadline.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle. Travel and driving are job requirements.
Other General Responsibilities
- Participate in staff meetings.
- Participate in School Psychologist team meetings.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others.
- Maintain appropriate, confidential records and provide timely reports.
- Keep abreast of new supports for students.
- Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Assist in general office functions, as needed, in an effort to provide continuity in office operations.
- See that Interlocal policies are observed during all activities.
- Identify and report child abuse, neglect, & suicidal ideation.
- Actively seek out learning opportunities to expand knowledge regarding best practices and remain up to date regarding SEL for schools in the area.
- Maintain license (see Qualifications).
- Obtain advance approval for inservice training, as required.
- Adhere to all district and Interlocal health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
Qualifications
- Social Worker (preferred), School Psychologist, School Counselor
- Social Worker: (a) Must hold a current and valid license to practice social work in the state of Kansas, issued by the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board & (b) Masters degree required (LMSW) or Clinical Specialist (LSCSW) level. Can bill Medicaid.
- School Psychologist: (a) Must hold a current and valid license through KSDE as a licensed School Psychologist & (b) understands the job description is not a typical school psychologist job role & (c) may also be responsible for School Psychology Job Description. Can bill Medicaid.
- School Counselor: (a) Must hold a current and valid license through KSDE as a licensed school counselor. Cannot bill Medicaid.
- Must hold a valid drivers license. Itinerant position - vehicle included.

Salary
Salary is based on School Psychologist salary schedule.
