The Fiber Optic Technician is responsible for the installation, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fiber optic cables and systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability. The ideal candidate will work in both inside and outside plant environments, ensuring all installations and repairs meet industry standards and customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities
Installation & Splicing
- Install, terminate, and splice fiber optic cables using fusion splicing techniques.
- Prepare and maintain fiber optic enclosures, patch panels, and junction boxes.
- Perform fiber optic cable routing and management in various environments (aerial, underground, inside plant).
- Ensure all fiber optic splices and terminations meet required loss budgets and industry standards.
Testing & Troubleshooting
- Conduct fiber optic testing using OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer), power meters, and light sources to verify signal integrity.
- Analyze test results, document findings, and troubleshoot any signal loss or connectivity issues.
- Identify, locate, and repair fiber faults, including cut fibers, high-loss splices, and damaged connectors.
- Perform quality assurance tests to ensure all installations meet company and customer requirements.
Maintenance & Documentation
- Perform routine fiber optic system maintenance and preventative checks.
- Maintain accurate documentation of fiber routes, splicing diagrams, test results, and work logs.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other team members to ensure smooth operations and efficient troubleshooting.
- Adhere to safety protocols, company policies, and industry regulations during all installations and repairs.
Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Experience in fusion splicing and termination of fiber optic cables.
- Proficiency in fiber testing tools such as OTDR, power meters, and light sources.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and repair fiber optic network issues.
- Knowledge of industry standards and best practices (TIA/EIA, IEEE, NEC, etc.).
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment in various conditions (fieldwork, confined spaces, heights).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to read and interpret fiber optic schematics, blueprints, and test results.
- Basic understanding of fiber optic network architectures (PON, GPON, active Ethernet).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as needed.
Preferred
- Certifications in fiber optics (CFOT, FOA, ETA, or equivalent).
- Experience with fiber optic network construction, including aerial and underground cable installation.
- Familiarity with fiber management software and reporting tools.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and industry safety protocols.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work in both indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- May require extended working hours, including nights and weekends, depending on project needs.
