SUMMARY
Sets up and operates one or more Computer Numerical Control wire electrical discharge machines to shape graphite, ferrous and non-ferrous work pieces to specifications, following charts and manuals, applying knowledge of: wire EDM process, workpiece properties, methods, theories, and shop math.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, set up sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine setup procedures, control settings, and machining methods and sequences.
- Mounts, aligns, and secures tooling, attachments, and work piece on the machine.
- Loads control media in machine controller or enters commands to retrieve pre-programmed instructions from database and/or from the supplied cut paths from the manufacturer.
- Calculates and sets machine controls to position the wire in relationship to workpiece and to regulate factors such as spark gap, feeds and speeds, tapers, wire alignment, flush volume and pressure, and/or workpiece submersion.
- Starts machine and monitors displays and machine operation to detect malfunctions.
- Enters commands or manually adjusts machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining.
- Stops machine to change wire spools, diameter of wire or setup according to required machining sequence or to measure workpiece for conformance to blueprint specifications, using precision measuring instruments.
- Sets machine to run automatically for unattended machining.
- Operates machines manually to perform non-automated functions.
- Discuss control media errors with supervisor or programming personnel to resolve problems.
- Communicates with coworkers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
- Inspects and measures workpieces and fixtures for follow-up machining.
- Performs routine machine maintenance such as: disassembly of head unit to clean, change wire guides that are worn, replace damaged flush caps and change dirty filters.
- Keeps work area and machine clean and organized.
- Operates Forklift (requires license)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
4 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
MATHEMATICAL SKILL
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of algebra and trigonometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Blue print reading and interpretation.
