Allan Hancock College is seeking a dedicated and innovative individual to join our Social and Behavior Sciences department as a full-time, 175-day (10-month annual contract) tenure-track faculty member. The successful candidate will be committed to providing high-quality education to a diverse student body, focusing on fostering an inclusive, supportive, and academically challenging learning environment.

This position involves teaching various psychology courses, both in-person and online, and contributing as an active member of the department and the college. The assignment may include teaching at off-campus centers and/or evening classes as well as distance education/online classes.

Allan Hancock College is a California public community college located in northern Santa Barbara County. Approximately 11,500 credit students enroll each semester at one of the college's four locations in Santa Maria, Lompoc, Santa Ynez Valley, or at Vandenberg Space Force Base. Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Qualifications

Teach a variety of psychology courses, which may include General Psychology, Social Psychology, Theories of Personality, Human Sexuality, Child Psychology, Human Development, Abnormal Psychology, Research Methods, and more.

Develop and deliver course materials, syllabi, and assessments that align with departmental standards and the college’s educational mission.

Utilize effective teaching strategies and the college's course management system to engage students and enhance learning and program outcomes.

Provide academic mentorship to students, helping them to achieve their educational and career goals.

Participate in curriculum development, program review, and assessment activities.

Engage in professional development opportunities and remain current in the field of psychology.

Collaborate with department colleagues and participate in the college’s participatory governance structure.

Foster an inclusive classroom environment that respects and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Support students' academic and personal growth through office hours, academic support services, and campus resources.

Participate in outreach and contribute to the college’s mission to serve the local community.

Knowledge Of And/or Experience In/with

teaching strategies that address the needs of students with a variety of learning styles, skills, motivation, and education both in the classroom and online

the overall field of psychology as evidenced by undergraduate and graduate coursework

teaching lower-division college-level psychology courses

Demonstrated Ability To

maintain sensitivity and understanding to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and staff and students with disabilities

provide academic, career, and personal guidance for psychology students

work with and assist students having a broad range of skills, motivation, and academic or career technical education goals

communicate effectively, both in oral and written communications, and demonstrate strength in interpersonal communication

collaborate with both instructional and service faculty and staff to assist students to understand and use counseling, college success services, and resources

identify and use learning outcomes and assessments that lead to course and program improvements

design, review, and evaluate curriculum and make recommendations to maintain program currency for both vocational and transfer students

act as a primary contact for the psychology program

assist in scheduling classes for the psychology program

coordinate with Human Resources to recruit, hire, mentor, and evaluate part-time faculty

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in psychology

OR

Bachelor's degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling, sociology, statistics, neuroscience, or social work.

OR

The equivalent as outlined in Board Policy 7211 (Download PDF reader)

Additional Information

Beginning Date: January 2025, pending board approval.

The hiring salary range is $66,760 to $83,710 dependent upon education and experience.
