Position Summary
This is advanced professional or supervisory work in environmental health engineering. An employee in this class reviews complex applications/reports/other materials involving various types of environmental health engineering facilities, or performs work of equivalent scope and complexity in the field or central office. Work assignments are given with general instructions, and the employee is responsible for selecting and interpreting applicable guidelines. The employee normally has the authority to make decisions within the assigned scope of responsibility, but program goals and administrative policy matters emanate from a higher level. Supervision may be exercised over a staff of support staff, engineers and/or technicians. Work is reviewed by a higher-level engineer or administrator upon completion, for compliance with technical standards, departmental policies and procedures, and adequacy of results.

- Modern principles and practices of engineering as applied to public health. Examples may include industrial wastes treatment, solid waste control, bathing places, and water quality management of surface and underground waters.
- Basic engineering principles such as those applied to asbestos, air pollution, sanitary engineering, including hydraulics, fluid mechanics, unit operations, engineering drawing, strength of materials, and mechanics.
- Basic principles of sanitary chemistry, aquatic biology, water bacteriology, physics, and calculus.
- Commercial and industrial operations and processes.
- Regulations such as air quality regulations, permitting and engineering practices and controls
- The types, operation, characteristics, and proper application of environmental control devices, engineering controls and work practices.
- The relationships of the environmental conditions to human health.
- Microsoft Office programs including Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and other database programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of regulations, permitting and engineering practices and controls (Ex. Air Quality & Waste Water).
- Knowledge of the relationships of the environmental conditions to human health.
- Knowledge of the basic engineering principles of as applied to pollution, physical and biological sciences, calculus, combustion, organic and inorganic chemistry and statistical analysis.
- Knowledge of commercial and industrial operations and processes
- Knowledge of the modern principles and practices of engineering (Ex. Air Quality & Waste Water) as applied to public health.
- Knowledge of the functions of local government, financing of public works, and County, State, and Federal legislation pertinent to pollution control.
