Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, the Mechanic Helper assists with vehicle maintenance, facility upkeep, equipment transport, parts pickup, and mail distribution. Responsibilities include maintaining shop cleanliness, documenting repairs, and following safety procedures to support efficient operations. This position is covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists Mechanics with the repair and maintenance of county-owned vehicles and equipment.
Assists Mechanics with service calls for disabled vehicles and equipment.
Records and documents all vehicle and equipment repairs.
Transports equipment and vehicles to and from job sites.
Picks up parts as directed by the Supervisor or Parts Manager.
Distributes mail daily between Highway Department locations.
Washes and maintains equipment.
Performs shop maintenance and keeps the work area clean and organized.
Performs other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience in engine repair, maintenance, or a related field
Must have a basic set of tools. A $1,200 annual allowance for upgrades
Working knowledge of air brakes, hydraulic brakes, and Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS)
Ability to perform wiring repairs and follow safety procedures
Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures necessary for working with heavy equipment and machinery
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Experience operating forklifts, Bobcats, and performing welding/soldering under established safety guidelines
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
The Mechanic Helper is expected to efficiently support Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of county vehicles, ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and in a timely manner. This role requires adherence to safety protocols while handling equipment, performing facility maintenance, and assisting with service calls. The Mechanic Helper must maintain accurate records of repairs, transport equipment as needed, and ensure a clean and organized work environment. Attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, and effective communication with team members are essential for success in this role.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Mechanic Helper works in a shop environment with frequent standing, lifting, bending, and exposure to hazardous equipment, fumes, and noise. The role requires lifting up to 60 pounds, reaching overhead, kneeling, and occasional ladder climbing. Tasks involve handling tools, monitoring equipment, and maintaining attention to detail. Exposure to extreme temperatures and chemicals is possible, requiring adherence to safety protocols.
