Department: Highway                                                                                                FLSA Status: Non-exempt Classification/Level:D - V                                                                                         Date:  6/2023 Under the direction of the Highway Department Barn Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker I performs maintenance and repair to county roads and highways. This position is covered as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:   Responsible for the operation of trucks and heavy machinery to maintain or construct roads, culverts, bridges, and drainage structures. Conducts inspections, ensuring proper fluid levels, tire pressure, and mechanical functionality of trucks and equipment before and after use. Replaces catch basins and conducts repairs on field tile for water drainage purposes. Provides traffic control and flagging at road construction sites. Works as part of a road crew, performing asphalt repairs, mowing, vector removal, and other related maintenance tasks. Takes charge of snow removal, machine repairs, brush cutting, tree removal, dead animal removal, and stump grinding. Loads, transports, deposits, and spreads materials such as crushed stone, sand, salt, and others using trucks. Demonstrates proficiency in operating precise electronic equipment and completing tasks involving slope grade lasers, sondes for tile tracing, operating underground cameras, slope levels, and station surveying for right-of-way. Maintains work reports and records as required by the County and Department of Transportation (DOT). Adheres to County, State, and Federal Safety Regulations, Policies, and Procedures in performing all duties.  Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.   REQUIREMENTS:   High School Diploma or GED and one year experience in truck and heavy equipment operation experience preferred.  Commercial Driver’s License with Class A endorsement for operating County vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of patching highways, OSHA rules for working near and around traffic. Knowledge of basic roadway construction Ability to operate dump trucks, chain saw, construction equipment and tools including, but not limited to loader, bob cat, excavator, back-hoe, and motor grader. Working knowledge of repair and proper installation of the water run off systems and drainage. Maintain Forklift Certification in addition to participating in all safety training programs offered.         PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:   The Maintenance Worker I carries out moderately complex tasks involving the operation and inspection of heavy equipment. They must possess a thorough understanding of the work process while replacing catch basins and conducting repairs on field tile for water runoff drainage.     RESPONSIBILITY:   The Maintenance Worker I carries out their responsibilities under moderate supervision, following detailed instructions. They must demonstrate caution and proficiency when operating trucks, equipment, and attachments to prioritize personal safety and the well-being of others.     PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:   The Maintenance Worker I maintains regular communication with fellow County employees while performing maintenance and repairs on County highways and roads. The Maintenance Worker I demonstrates tact, respect, patience, and professionalism when interacting with co-workers, the public, and outside agencies.     WORKING CONDITIONS:   The Maintenance Worker I regularly lifts objects weighing up to sixty pounds, frequently engages in bending, pushing, pulling loads, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, and crawling. They spend considerable time standing and sitting, with some walking. The job involves frequent exposure to temperature extremes and hazardous equipment, as well as regular exposure to noise, unpleasant odors, fumes, and occasional exposure to chemicals. Attention to detail, equipment monitoring, and detailed inspections are frequently required, along with some proofreading.
