Under the direction of the Service Center Manager, the Automotive Technician performs diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of County vehicles. They are also responsible for preventive maintenance, fabricating specialty parts, up-fitting vehicles with necessary equipment, and maintaining accurate documentation. This position is Covered under The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the diagnosis and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, suspension and steering, brakes, airbags, ABS, power train, electrical, and A/C.
  • Performs preventive and required maintenance, including but not limited to oil changes, engine tune-ups, and tire repairs and replacements.
  • Fabricates and welds specialty parts to mount on vehicles.
  • Performs up-fitting of public safety and emergency vehicles and non-emergency vehicles with required equipment, including but not limited to lighting, sirens, consoles, electrical, and wiring.
  • Performs light vehicle body paint and repair.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records in the fleet management system on all vehicle repairs and maintenance performed, including but not limited to parts, time, work performed, and discipline.
  • Installs and activates GPS units in vehicles.
  • Assists with the upkeep of grounds and buildings, including but not limited to trash removal, shoveling snow, cleaning shop and work areas, and maintaining tools.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED with automotive maintenance and repair training and three years’ experience
  • ASE Certifications preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License to operate County-owned vehicles
  • Working knowledge of vehicle systems and diagnostic equipment
  • Attention to detail, detailed inspections, and ability to recognize and report unsafe vehicles and equipment
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical circuits
  • Strong verbal communication skills and work ethic
  • Minor engineering and fabrication skills
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technology and procedures related to vehicle repair, as well as participate in training/learning opportunities
  • Ability to use a computer and various computer software programs
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening

The Automotive Technician applies their expertise to standard tasks and makes recommendations for specialized work, ensuring accuracy to protect tools, materials, and ensure safety. They can suggest or request deviations from general instructions for specialized vehicle upfitting and ordering necessary parts, requiring a high degree of precision to ensure the safety of others.

Personal Work Relationships

The Automotive Technician provides customer service and maintains contact with County employees when providing maintenance service to County vehicles.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

The Automotive Technician works in a standard garage environment with periods of continuous exerted effort. They frequently stand and walk, with some sitting occasionally. The role involves frequent lifting up to sixty pounds, bending, pushing, pulling loads, crawling, and climbing ladders. Frequent reaching overhead and kneeling are required. The technician is often exposed to temperature extremes, dangerous equipment, chemicals, noise, and noxious odors or fumes, necessitating strict safety precautions.

  • The position involves continuous standing and physical endurance.
  • Frequent typing and meticulous attention to detail are needed, with continuous use of fine motor skills and repetitive motions.
  • Tasks require frequent lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling, focusing on accuracy and repetitive hand movements.
