Publicist

The mission of the Allen Institute administration team is to provide support and structure to the scientific divisions. Coinciding with the team science approach, administration helps facilitate team learning and the overall mission of the institute.
The Allen Institute is seeking a Publicist to serve as a key member of the Global Partnerships & Philanthropy team. As a member of this team, you will report to the Executive Director of Global Partnerships and Philanthropy and work closely with the President & CEO, Executive Vice President and Executive Director of Communications (as well as other members of the executive leadership team). In this role, you will develop and deliver a cohesive global External Relations strategy to expand the visibility of the Allen Institute and its ambitions to non-specialist audiences. It is important to note that this role is strategic, but also significantly operational in terms of the implementation and delivery of the program for engagement.

Essential Functions
- Develop the strategic plan for global publicity campaigns targeting non-specialist audiences to maximize opportunities, profile, partnership and philanthropic potential globally
- Implementation of global publicity campaigns, specifically aimed at non-specialist audiences
- Identify and establish a group/s of experts, advocates and influencers to support the reach of the Allen Institute and its publicity campaigns
- Work closely with the communications and marketing team to create on-trend social media and blog posts to reach non specialist audiences
- Work with the Communications and marketing team to develop informative press kits (specifically aimed at non industry / non science press)
- Build and maintain good relationships with non-life science media organizations, press contacts and influencers
- Organize promotional events for the Allen Institute and for key Allen Institute scientists in the US and Internationally to support partnership and philanthropic ambitions
- Represent the company in interviews and press conferences specifically focused on non-specialist press and new promotional opportunities that support the visibility of the Institute in non-traditional markets
- Analyze the impact of the publicity strategy and making adjustments where necessary
- Manage budgets, targets, and deadlines
- Conduct market research and reporting back on findings
- Work with the Directorates and functions to ensure that the Allen Institutes publicity aims and activity are delivered effectively and engage diverse, multi-sectoral and international stakeholder groups and experts
- Implement a stakeholder communication and stewardship plan to ensure engagement with the Institute and build awareness globally
- Convene, and operationalize, a global community of visible and well-known experts to participate in Allen Institute events globally to help build profile and encourage wider engagement with the Allen Institute
- Responsible for resource allocation, including budget and headcount

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent combination of degree and experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in communications, public relations, press or related field
- Previous public relations or press experience
- An extensive network of influence with non-science press nationally and internationally
- Strong understanding of social media and internet culture
- Copywriting and content creation skills
Preferred Education and Experience
- Masters Degree or equivalent work experience in related fields
- 6-10 years of related experience in communications, public relations, or press
- Meticulous attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with people at all levels of the organization and from a wide variety of backgrounds
- Strong work ethic, sense of urgency, and self-motivation, including the ability to follow through to complete tasks independently
- Events experience in an institutional, non-profit or agency environment is preferred
- Strong MS Office 2010 experience Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Office 365 experience preferred
- Background with database management, such as Blackbaud, Luminate CRM or Salesforce, preferred
- Outgoing personality with excellent interpersonal skills
- Creative, results-driven mindset
- Confident public speaking ability
Physical Demands
- Sitting, standing and/or walking for up to 8 hours per day
- Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds
- Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment
- Push/pull up to 40lbs of equipment on a cart
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Evening and weekend working hours required
- This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment for Washington State residents. Allen Institute is located at 615 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA.

Annualized Salary Range
- $120,439 - $189,008*
* Final salary depends on required education for the role, experience, and level of skills relevant to the role, along with work location, where applicable.
