Summary

The Assistant Engineer works with the Chief Engineer to ensure the maintenance, efficient operation, and safety of the engine room and all machinery spaces of the Alaskan Dream Cruises vessel. This position also ensures the operational readiness of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. This position also assists in the maintenance of cabins, galleys, and hotel equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in adequately operating and maintaining all systems in the engineering spaces.  This includes but is not limited to, the propulsion systems and their controls, bilge and fire systems, electrical systems and components, HVAC systems, various pumps and piping systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and fuel and oil systems.  The maintenance of these systems centers on the preventive maintenance plan in place on the vessel. The Assistant Engineer is required to keep the Chief Engineer notified of the condition of these systems and report any maintenance on these systems that would affect their operation. 
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in the maintenance and repair of deck machinery such as capstans, winches, davits, and miscellaneous hydraulics.  As directed by the Chief Engineer, keep the potable water system to ADEC standards and ensure that proper documentation and records prove compliance.  Assisted in maintaining and repairing hotel systems such as air conditioning, MSD systems, and plumbing and responded to passenger and crew complaints about these systems.  As directed by the Chief Engineer, regularly inspect all voids and bilges for structural and watertight integrity and ensure they are kept clean and dry according to pollution control regulations.   
  • Assist the deck department with line handling and rigging of the ship's gangway.  Other deck duties may be required as assigned by the vessel master. 
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in maintaining proper engineering logs, including the daily log, fuel and water logs, gray and black water logs, preventive maintenance records, and machinery index.   
  • Hold a position on the ship’s Emergency Station Bill.  Must meet the requirements of the Emergency Station Bill for both drills and actual emergencies, including fire, flooding, man overboard, abandoned ship, medical, and spill response.  Participates in crew safety meetings.   
  • Special projects may be assigned as required by the business.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities)

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED 
  • Vocational training and education are required, along with specialized or technical knowledge and formal training in operating and maintaining all onboard systems, including diesel mechanics, marine electricity, refrigeration, and hydraulics.
  • Strong communication skills: verbal, non-verbal, and writing skills, as well as the ability to communicate written technical information.  
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to manage situations where issues must be resolved satisfactorily. (Such as stateroom repairs) 
  • Strong technical knowledge, communication, and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Must be experienced at multi-tasking and remain flexible in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Microsoft Office experience.
  • Valid US driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in tourism and cruise industry.
  • Strong understanding of vessel construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of marine engineering, including electrical systems.

  • Ability to walk on uneven deck surfaces, crossing from vessel to vessel.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be physically able to work a typical workday of about 10-14 hours per day, seven days a week.
  • Physically able to climb a 7-foot vertical ladder and fit through a 28-inch escape hatch.

  • When onboard, the crew stays in shared quarters with little privacy and constant vibration and engine noise, often for extended periods.
  • Due to the remote locations of vessel routes, internet connectivity is limited.
  • This is a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends and holidays during the tour season.
