Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Liaison with USCG regarding all vessel notifications and follow-up investigations. Oversee vessel COI preparation with assigned captains and coordinate vessel COI annual inspections.
- Oversee and organize required crew drills for the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
- Responsible for handling problems as they arise and prudent in decisions of what problems they can handle and when to elevate concerns to their immediate supervisor. Should provide solutions whenever possible and actively look for ways to correct problems. Strive for process improvements across their operation.
- Responsible for training new and existing captains and mates. This training includes the operation of the vessels and understanding vessel navigation, tour routes, and area familiarization.
- Cultivate a work environment of delivering on our promised service levels while creating a culture of employee appreciation.
- Works with the Director of Marine Operations to staff our vessels.
- Coordination with other departments such as Operations, Engineering, and Hotel.
- Create a positive work environment. Responsible for employee retention and driving a high percentage of returning captains and crew every season. Manage effectively so the company is an employer of choice and cultivates a learning environment for future captains.
- Train and qualify new captains to maneuver the vessels in a safe and competent manner with particular emphasis on their area of operation and the requirements of their tour.
- Oversee and ensure captains’ preparedness for any non-regular routes of vessels, particularly in the case of charters and group tours. Accountable that captains are familiar with any new routes they are conducting.
- Ensure captains are monitoring and handling all safety and mechanical systems on board and are complying with USCG regulations before operating vessels and while they are in service. Responsible for training captains on vessel processes related to fuel, water, and sewage.
- Responsible for managing their budget responsibility and implementing cost reductions without compromising safety and quality for our customers.
- Recommend and implement policies, processes, and procedures to improve profitability across areas of responsibility and ensure that the captains and crews are responsible for contributing to the goal of saving money and maximizing profits.
- Plan and execute preseason deckhand and engineer training in conjunction with the Port Engineer.
- Responsible for coordinating with the captains to document the projects required during the off-season.
- Schedule and conduct the captain’s preseason training and ensure captain’s meetings are occurring throughout the season.
- Qualified to operate all ADC vessels and licensed to be a backup captain when necessary.
- Act as a relief captain as needed.
- Participate with the corporate recruiting team to ensure adequate staffing before and during the season. Responsible for communicating to the recruitment team staffing resources needed to backfill for turnover of crew.
- Reprogram all Nobeltec software on board each vessel and assist captains with the proper operation of associated communication and electronic systems including AIS.
- Responsible for all Coast Guard inspections onboard ADC vessels
- Assist in route planning and building the technical itinerary.
- Assist in preseason training and start up process.
- Special projects may be assigned as required by the business.
- Responsible for various reporting Forest service, State Parks and others as assigned.
- Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience or 7-10 years of relevant and applicable work experience
- Maritime experience as a licensed Captain with a 100-ton license or higher required.
- Previous experience in hospitality, travel, tourism, or other related industry highly preferred. However, other transferable experiences will be considered.
- Previous experience as a captain for an organization that transports customers in the tourism industry or other related work experience.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organization skills.
- Demonstrated success as a supervisor in high-volume and high-stress environments during busy commercial activity. Must be emotionally mature and adaptable to constantly changing business and employee demands.
- Must be experienced at multi-tasking and remain flexible in a demanding and fast-paced environment
- Effective at leading captains and other crew employees. Includes keeping them engaged and retaining talent that returns each season.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and will participate in the random drug testing program.
- Ability to be on call as needed, especially during the company’s profitable busy season.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Valid US driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Must pass a security background check.
- Experience in tourism and cruise industry.
- Endorsement with STCW-95 Basic Safety Training, Bridge Resource Management, and Advanced Fire Fighting.
