SUMMARY:
This is a full-time position as a Firefighter at Allendale Charter Township. The following information is intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by people assigned to this classification. This is not constructed to be an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified. This position requires the ability to work during daytime hours of 6am to 6pm. The work weekdays may be adjusted to cover vacation times of other full-time staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must be able to respond to daytime alarms during normal daytime working hours which will be 6am to 6pm weekdays.
- Must attend at least one (1) of the monthly training meetings each month. This may be a day or night training meeting. The training requirements will be set by the training officer in conjunction with the firefighter’s schedule.
- Must follow all department policies and procedures not contrary to this policy, in addition to the requirements of the “Firefighter Job Description.”
- May be assigned a duty team but must be willing to cover during critical daytime hours.
- Willing to attend additional training in new equipment or apparatus.
- May respond to structure fires or major incidents at other times when available.
- Special guidelines will be an attachment to this policy for firefighters already a member of another fire department.
- Maintain and develop fire prevention programs and community risk reduction programs.

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES:
· Full-time Firefighter positions shall meet the following knowledge and skill requirements.
· Logic, institute, analysis and interpretation of adopted property maintenance code and local ordinances.
· Good communication skills, handwriting, spelling, punctuation, grammar and editing.
Contact with the public, responding to questions, sharing information, explanation of issues and procedures.
· Critical thinking, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
· Research and organizational skills.
· Ability to meet deadlines and operate in a fast pace, high stress environment.
· Represent the township in a positive manner.
· Ability to operate economically and efficiently.
· Ability to plan and direct varied operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High school diploma or GED, Associates, or work towards an Associates in Fire Science, Public Administration, or related field preferred
Experience:
Three years (3) Paid on Call or Full-Time in the fire service
Licenses:
Michigan EMT
Certifications:
State of Michigan FF I & II Certified, Michigan HAZMAT Operations Certified

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is typically performed at the fire station except while at a fire or emergency scene. At a fire scene, the employee may be exposed to extreme noise, dust, dirt, irritating chemicals, inclement weather, extreme temperatures and hazardous situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to use computers with a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle with a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to operate equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry 50lbs.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to effectively communicate clearly in verbal and written form.
- Ability to follow safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
No overnight travel unless participating in a conference. Occasional travel to other municipalities during the workday is expected.
