What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sexual Assault/Shelter Advocate position at Alliance Against Family Violence?
Job Summary: As a fulltime Sexual Assault/Shelter Advocate, the primary responsibility is to provide crisis intervention to individuals who are affected by domestic and family violence and sexual assault. Duties will include answering hotline calls, risk assessment, safety planning, crisis counseling during business hours with occasional evening, weekend and overnight availability on an oncall basis.
When providing intake and assessment, the primary focus will be on immediate and brief crisis intervention and referral work. This position benefits from having analytical skills, a high level of emotional intelligence, and the ability to understand pertinent facts and needs in a short period of time, to provide appropriate services to victims. Must work well with persons of varied sexual preference, racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds, and with individuals with disabilities. This position will supervise and monitor the safety and security of the shelter and all clients. Spanish language fluency is a plus
Essential Job Functions:
- Provide crisis line, office, and shelter coverage during the shift. Assess immediate crisis needs of clients and address appropriately. Manage incoming calls and walk-ins and complete necessary documentation. Support the daily operations of the shelter office.
- Complete and maintain client records that document services provided by assisting in maintaining files, as needed.
- Provide direct domestic violence and sexual assault services as assigned. As well as informing crime victims of their statutory rights under KSA 74-7301, 74-7333, 74-7335.
- Refer clients to other agencies and resources and advocate directly with other agencies as needed to help clients access necessary services. Maintain service partnerships with referral agencies.
- Conduct potential shelter client assessments and intakes. Orient clients to shelter rules and policies. Assure that appropriate shelter rules and policies are practiced. Assist clients in identifying and fulfilling needs. Provide sexual assault advocacy services in the community and accompany survivors for Sexual Assault Forensic Exams.
- Oversee shelter environment and activities, facilitate problem solving for in-house conflicts and crises, encourage and model appropriate shelter interactions. Mediate on behalf of residential clients when appropriate. Provide appropriate follow-up and documentation of emergency incidents or non-compliance of rules.
- Complete required training. Facilitate weekly educational support groups on the nature and dynamics of sexual assault, coping skills, developing positive support networks and other related topics for survivors.
- Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, and other meetings as needed. Complete outreach activities to promote services available and support community prevention efforts.
- Perform other related duties as requested and required.
