Description

POSITION TITLE:  Tool Repair Machinist

PAY GRADE:   Non-Exempt / Grade 8

BUSINESS UNIT:  AMG Business Unit                                     Dept:  25-AMG Repair-Mold Build                                                                

REPORTS TO:  Supervisor-AMG                             

PURPOSE:  An effective Tool Repair Machinist holds safety as a value. Demonstrates safe work practices in all they do and has no hesitation notifying anyone of an unsafe situation. Can work as a cohesive team and has the skill to identify problems and recommend improvements to provide quality, on time products to our customers. The primary responsibility of the Tool Repair Machinist is to plan out the work required for multi-step mold and die repair projects and complete them in the most time effective and cost-efficient way possible.

1.0 DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Follow all safety rules, maintains a clean work environment, and adheres to all TPM requirements for their work area.
  2. Ability to read and understand CAD drawings, part tolerancing and tolerance stack up of assemblies.
  3. Ability to plan out the work required for multi-step mold and die repair projects to complete them in the most effective and cost-efficient way.
  4. Perform Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) duties, as assigned. Those duties are best described as those tasks required to clean, inspect, and lubricate the equipment and work area. Refer to the work center specific work instructions for guidance. General characteristics of TPM Duties are as follows.
      • Take 5 Minutes or less
      • Require 2 tools or less
      • Are performed daily, weekly, or monthly
      • Are Identified in the OEM Manual as an Operations Requirement
      • Tasks that are accessible
  5. Ability to set up and use basic hand tools, power tools, NC Mills/Lathes, and equipment common to mold and die repair activities.
  6. Ability to program 2-axis mill.
  7. Ability to proficiently use MIG,TIG, and laser welding techniques.
  8. Ability to proficiently polish tool steel to specific finishes.
  9. Ability to set up and use the heat treat oven to harden steel to specified hardness.
  10. Ability to use overhead cranes and forklifts to move molds and dies safely and effectively.
  11. Ability to use the water circuit tester/cleaner as needed to check flow rates and clean water circuits.
  12. Is able to test, troubleshoot, and repair heaters and hot runner systems.
  13. Ability to split, spot off and adjust final fit of molds and dies correctly without assistance.
  14. Ability to follow documented work instructions and follow company policies and procedures.
  15. Always maintain cleanliness of equipment and workstation areas.
  16. Work with team members to maximize productivity and efficiency.
  17. Targeted reduction in waste of all forms (time, materials, labor).
  18. Communicate effectively with supervisors, group leads and business unit managers.
  19. Creating and continually improving upon a culture of teamwork, accountability, and trust by modeling expectations and providing positive feedback to drive desired behaviors.
  20. Documenting and submitting performance reporting (IQMS) as required to capture data and document preventive maintenance tasks performed on molds and dies.
  21. Gaining knowledge , expanding skill set, share lessons learned, adhere to established best practices for the shop, and keeping up to date on safety and quality regulatory notices.
  22. Responsible for maintaining regular and reliable attendance and punctuality per company policies and procedures.
  23. Work cooperatively with engineers, quality, production, and others to achieve optimized outcomes.
  24. Performing other duties, as assigned.

 

2.0       REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Ability to accurately measure work pieces and inspect work performance using         inspection tools and gauges, portable CMM probe/scan, and CNC inspection probe.
  • Participate in design reviews, costing activities, problem solving, and continuous improvement activities as needed.
  • Ability to read and understand CAD drawings and tolerances.
  • Ability to program 2-axis mill.

                                   

3.0       EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Certificate in machine shop technology or machine tool technology/machinist and/or recognized apprenticeship certificate preferred.
  • Three to five (3-5) years prior tooling repair machining experience working in a machine shop building molds preferred.
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED. Capable of growing in knowledge and demonstrating competency in your job.

4.0       MENTAL / VISUAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • Ability to generate reporting documents and participate in team meetings.
  • Self-motivated with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced machining environment.
  • Good general ability with use of computer touch screens and written documents.
  • Basic math skills, ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Work cooperatively with engineers, quality, production, and others to achieve optimized outcomes.
  • Participation with determining best machining options and estimating cost on quoting of new jobs and manage actual work performed on jobs won to hit cost targets.
  • Continually look for, and recommend, improved cutting program strategies, cutting tools and work holding options that improves overall quality, efficiency, and throughput.
  • Mentor apprentices and others in the skills that you are proficient in.

6.0       WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the associate frequently works near moving parts. The associate may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. Due to the open environment of the building, must be able to work in various temperatures. Involves moderate or occasional presence of unfavorable conditions, i.e., cold, dust, heat, noise, odor, chemicals, etc. Safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, heat protective sleeves, and safety shoes may be required in the area that you are working in based on our safety PPE standards.
