GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting Pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records.
All responsibilities are performed in consideration of the ages of the individuals served. The tasks listed in this job description should be performed in a manner indicative of the employee’s ability to secure and interpret information pertinent to the customer needs, a knowledge of human development and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these customers.
The Pharmacy Technician must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to the age of the patients served within the Allied Services – pediatric through geriatric. The Pharmacy Technician must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span; possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status; interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs; and to provide the care needed as described in the Pharmacy Services policies and procedures.

EDUCATION:
High School graduate or equivalent required.
Certification as a Pharmacy Technician preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
One (1) to two (2) years of pharmacy experience preferred.
SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a current certification as a Pharmacy Technician preferred.
Must maintain current Technician Certification if applicable.
Knowledge of pharmacy law, numerical ability, aseptic technique, accurate analysis and evaluation of orders required.
Must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
Must maintain confidentiality of patient, visitor and employee information.
Must be able to organize and prioritize assignments.
Must demonstrate independent thinking/sound judgment, clinical expertise, ability to teach/instruct, and possess manual and finger dexterity.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF JOB:

Compounds intravenous admixtures or other sterile products (including irrigations, opthalmics and parenteral nutrition) accurately and in compliance with USP797. Keeps appropriate stock levels of compounding materials, gowns and gloves,diluents,IV bases, medications.
- Fills prescriptions accurately with facility appropriate packaging and auxiliary labeling as well as stock requisitions and automated dispensing cabinets (E)
- Restocks and maintains inventory levels in work areas with labels, consumables, containers and other necessary production materials. Reorders anticipating turnover rate, lead time and safety stock. (E)
- Competent extemporaneous compounding skills. Accurate and demonstrated proficiency with balance, graduates and other measuring devices. Follows good manufacturing practices, labeling and documentation into compounding log.
- Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations. Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs. Maintains NDC continuity and compliance. (E)
- Prepackages bulk medications in unit dose packages and packages medications for dispensing accurately per established procedures. Proficient with Euclid, MTS, and Medi-Dose packaging systems. (E)
- Acquires and practices advanced skill set for maintaining pharmacy automation. Capable of reconfiguring medication assignments and troubleshooting routine problems. Can create reports on demand based on search requirement.
- Demonstrated knowledge of controlled substance handling ,distribution systems and documentation for all facility types within the organization.
- Receives, inspects and breaks down credits returned from facilities and returns to inventory. Can accurately credit returns within all pharmacy systems.
- Replenishes medications in emergency trays, Hospice comfort kits or starter boxes for floor stock areas accurately and timely. Completes billing.
- Participates in Pharmacy quality assurance process. Maintains log, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documents in appropriate locations. Assists with reporting. Knowledgeable of specialty labeling for medications to promote safe medication practices.
- Assists with answering telephones, identifying self and department; answers requests at the door. (E)
- Keeps Pharmacy clean, neat, and well organized. Keeps Pharmacy work areas and equipment clean. Keeps waste stream separate. HIPPA restricted waste, medications for destruction and sharps-biohazard-RCRA are sorted and prepared for transport and destruction. (E)
- Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly. Completes shelf inspections for expiration removing near expired medications to quarantine area. Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned.(E)

- Participates in orientation, education, and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials as assigned. (E)
