A mechanical engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and maintaining mechanical systems within power generation plants, including equipment like turbines, pumps, and cooling systems, often involving tasks like troubleshooting malfunctions, coordinating repairs, implementing improvements, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations, all while collaborating with operations and maintenance teams to optimize plant efficiency and reliability; this may also include project management for large capital improvements to mechanical systems within the power generation facilities.

Key responsibilities may include:
  • Design and analysis:
    • Creating detailed designs for new mechanical equipment, analyzing existing systems for potential failures, performing stress analysis, and developing specifications for procurement.
  • Maintenance support:
    • Troubleshooting mechanical issues, identifying root causes of equipment failures, collaborating with maintenance crews to execute repairs, and developing preventive maintenance plans.
  • Project management:
    • Leading the engineering aspects of large capital improvement projects, including budget management, schedule adherence, and vendor coordination.
  • Performance optimization:
    • Analyzing operational data to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements, implementing modifications to optimize system performance.
  • Compliance and safety:
    • Ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards and regulations related to mechanical systems, conducting safety reviews, and promoting safety practices within the team.
  • Technical documentation:
    • Preparing technical reports, drawings, and calculations to document design decisions and project progress.

Required skills and qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and machine design.
  • Experience with mechanical engineering software (e.g., CAD, FEA).
  • Knowledge of power generation processes and equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
