A "Protection and Control Engineer" is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining electrical protection systems on the power grid, ensuring its safety and reliability by detecting and responding to faults, coordinating with other system components, and overseeing the installation and maintenance of related equipment, including relays and control devices, across Santee Cooper's power generation and transmission network.
Key responsibilities may include :
- System Design :
Analyzing power system layouts to design and develop protection schemes, including fault ride-through, overcurrent, and distance protection relays, considering coordination with other system elements.
Performing complex calculations to set appropriate relay tripping parameters based on system impedance, fault levels, and operational requirements.
Conducting studies to ensure proper coordination between protective devices across the network, preventing unnecessary tripping and minimizing outage durations.
Overseeing the installation, testing, and commissioning of new protection relays and control devices at substations.
Responding to alarms, diagnosing faults, and performing maintenance on existing protection systems, including troubleshooting malfunctioning relays.
Providing technical expertise to operations staff regarding protection system functionality and troubleshooting
Leading projects related to protection system upgrades, expansions, or replacements, including budget management and schedule adherence.
