Responsibilities:
The After-School Academic Tutor position is responsible for supporting and guiding 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students in completing their daily schoolwork/homework assignments. Operating two days per week after school (Tuesdays 2:45pm-5:00pm, Wednesdays, 2:45pm-5:00pm), the tutor oversees sessions for a group of 10 students. The tutor will report to the Executive Director. This position requires patience, a positive attitude, and the ability to connect with students. Compensation is $25 per hour ($56.25 per session) and candidates must be available to work BOTH Tuesdays 2:45pm-5:00pm AND Wednesdays from 2:45pm-5:00pm.
I. Academic Support and Guidance
- Works primarily with students in grades 9-12.
- Review class material with students by discussing text, practice working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments.
- Help students learn new concepts and improve their understanding of previously learned concepts.
- Help students to develop study skills, note-taking skills, organization techniques, and test-taking strategies.
- Check completed assignments and homework.
- Establish a good rapport with students.
- Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
- Other duties as assigned.
II. Qualifications & Competencies
- An Associate’s degree or some college experience and demonstrated mastery in High School-level Math, Science, Reading, and/or English subjects
- At least one year experience in teaching/instruction
- Must have previous experience working with 9th-12th grade students
- Must have patience, a positive attitude, and be able to cultivate student’s interest in their own academic success
- Ability to express good judgment in role of mentor and academic advisor
- Ability to connect with others and forge strong relationships
- Possess time management and organizational skills
III. Essential functions/working conditions
- MUST be comfortable tutoring in-person and managing large groups of students (10 or more students)
- Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds
- Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology
- Able to effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Must have reliable transportation to Jalen Rose Leadership Academy (15000 Trojan St, Detroit, MI 48235)
IV. Compensation
- Starting pay at $25.00 per hour ($56.25 per session).
- Instructors must have Tuesdays 2:45pm-5:00pm AND Wednesdays 2:45pm-5:00pm availability
