Direct Care Staff Job Description
Direct care staff must be at least 21 years of age and will meet at least one of the qualifications in subdivision (A) and have relevant knowledge, skills and abilities as listed in subdivision (B)

  • Direct Care staff shall meet one of the following qualifications:
  • A Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree
  • A valid Child Development Teaching Permit
  • Completed 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development or Foster and Kinship Care Education and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth.
  • A valid certificate as an Alcohol Counselor, Drug Counselor or Alcohol and Drug Counselor and have at least 100 hours or experience working with youth.
  • A valid vocational training certificate, credential or documentation demonstrating that the individual is a trade journey person who instructs children in vocational skills and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth as a mentor, athletic coach, teacher, vocational coach, tutor, counselor or other relevant experience as determined by the department
  • Previously been employed as a full-time staff or served as a volunteer at a group home, short-term residential therapeutic program or substance abuse treatment program for at least one year.
  • Relevant life experience in the child welfare, mental health or juvenile justice systems as a consumer, mentor, or caregiver or other relevant experience as determined by the department.
  • At a minimum, a direct care staff shall demonstrate all of the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

1. Knowledge and understanding of the needs of children served in a children’s residential setting.

2. Skills and ability to engage and develop a rapport with children who have culturally diverse backgrounds.

3. Skills and ability to provide consistency and behavioral limits through relationship-based interventions.

4. Skills to communicate effectively with the ability to solve problems in a collaborative manner.

5. Demonstrate ability as a leader, group facilitator or supervisor

6. Knowledge and understanding of the needs of youth serviced in a residential setting.

7. Knowledge and proficiency in trauma-informed care and behavioral interventions

8. Compassionate and humble leadership skills

9. Ability to hear and internalize constructive criticism and feedback, including and especially from people with less power or privilege

Responsibilities and Duties include the following:

Direct Care Staff are to provide 24-hour supervision, daily functioning support, crisis intervention and life skills coaching to residents. Direct care staff is to create a safe and nurturing environment for youth as they assist them in regaining the skills necessary to return to family-based care setting.

  • To promote the health and safety of all residents
  • Perform supervision, protection and care of residents individually and in groups at all times.
  • To know the whereabouts of all clients at all times
  • Participate in implementation of residents Emergency Intervention Plan and Needs & Service Plan
  • Assist residents in working with a group and in handing individual problems
  • May be designated to apply the reasonable and prudent parent standard to decisions
  • Assist residents with medication self-administrations following completions of the agency’s medication training and successful completion of the post-training assessment.
  • To promote daily hygiene and grooming;
  • To ensure support staff has prepared food according to the facility menu;
  • To properly maintain, care and supervise clients of the facility;
  • To ensure proper usage of all facility property including but not limited to televisions, facility computers, kitchen equipment, facility washer/dryer, etc.;
  • To transport clients in the facility vehicle in a safe manner;
  • To participate in all facility activities when on duty;
  • To provide assistance to all mental health professionals when so requested;
  • To properly chart and document clients daily progress and emotional status;
  • To chart and document all unusual incidents;
  • To assist with assistance and encouragement with schoolwork;
  • To have the knowledge and ability to administer medication as required;
  • To coordinate activities with other direct care staff, consultants, the administrator and the licensee;
  • To attend all staff meetings and in-service programs;
  • To provide for the emotional and social development of each client;
  • To provide fair and equal treatment of each client;
  • To present yourself as a positive role model within the treatment milieu;
  • To encourage and accept the expression of opinions by clients;
  • To refrain from using any type of physical force against any client and to use physical restraint only when unquestionably required for the protection of the client, themselves, other clients, staff or facility property.

Supervision:

This position is under the direct supervision of the Administrator. The direct care staff directly supervises all clients.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour

  • 12 hour shift
  • 8 hour shift
  • Day shift
  • Night shift
  • On call
  • Weekends as needed
