JOB SUMMARY:
The Laboratory and Research Technician performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures under minimal supervision. Primarily, the laboratory and research technician collects and analyses data, keeps records, conducts technical research and prepares result reports for review.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinating support of all protocols, such as surgical programs.
- Advising scientific investigators and staff regarding procedural issues.
- Coordinating sample shipping, ensuring compliance with USDA and International Air Transport Association regulations.
- Ensuring general protocol adherence.
- Ensuring that necessary resources and supplies are available for studies.
- Maintaining surgical facilities.
- Collecting and recording experimental data for specific procedures.
- Providing post-op care and monitoring.
- Conducting biological samples for diagnostics, to include parasitology, bacteriology, serology and histopathology.
- Ensuring compliance with IACUC protocols and AGI SOPs.
- Demonstrating and training others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment. Calibrating, troubleshooting, and performing routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
- Performing administrative duties such as the following:
o maintaining detailed animal health and diagnostic test records;
o maintaining all records in accordance with relevant agency guidelines, to include the State of South Carolina, Public Health Service, the USDA, and AALAC.
- Monitoring the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances and performing related responsibilities as required.
- Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Laboratory Research Technologist has no supervisory responsibilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
To perform this job successfully, the Laboratory Research Technologist must:
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
- Experience in animal research or veterinary medicine is preferred.
- Experience with Non-Human Primates is preferred.
- Requires knowledge of Microsoft Office.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
- Requires knowledge of Microsoft Office.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
South Carolina Drivers’ License or equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents, including scientific literature, research reports and protocols, standard operation procedures (SOPs), and other instructions. Ability to communicate in writing to all levels of employees, including Directors and Managers.
REASONING ABILITIES:
Must be able to make decisions relative to research protocols and must know when to contact the Head of Research and Development and the Attending Veterinarian. Must have sufficient skills and abilities to know when there are problems within primate social groups and be able to work with appropriate staff to stabilize groups. The individual must be able to deal with diverse problems, to propose resolutions, and implement approved resolutions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to undergo fit testing for a N95 respirator mask. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The AGI work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to inclement weather, including cold, heat with high humidity, and precipitation. The noise level is usually moderate. The job requires the ability to direct those catching animals in safe and proper procedures, and to catch small to medium-sized animals without supervision. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required. Work hours are 8 hours per day, five days per week. There may be overtime hours required as well as weekend and evening work based on animal health and Company needs.
