Bear Valley Public Safety Officer Recruit: DSA Salary Range 42A: $31.49 - $38.28/hour
Bear Valley Public Safety Officer I: DSA Salary Range 43: $32.24 - $39.18/hour
(upon successful completion of P.O.S.T. academy and required training and certificates.)

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: High school diploma, GED or equivalent. A background in law enforcement or degree in a related field is desirable

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment, pursuant to California Government Code section 1031.
  • Be of good moral character and pass a comprehensive background investigation, including an FBI fingerprint check.
  • Meet the requirements of California Penal Code section 832 regarding search, seizure, and possession of a firearm.
  • Have no prior felony convictions, domestic violence, or hard drug use history.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, to perform law enforcement, fire suppression, search and rescue and emergency medical response services in Alpine County; and to perform related duties as assigned.

Experience:

Bear Valley Public Safety Officer I: Experience as a local law enforcement or public safety officer is desirable.

Bear Valley Public Safety Officer II: One year as a Public Safety Officer I in Alpine County or two years as a local law enforcement or public safety officer.

Other Requirements:

Bear Valley Public Safety Officer I: Possession of a valid California driver’s license with Class “B” or “F” endorsement.

Possession of a P.O.S.T. Basic certificate.

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Firefighter I certificate from an accredited Fire

Academy within six months of appointment.

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a First Responder Medical Card and public safety.

CPR certificate is desirable.

Bear Valley Public Safety Officer II: Possession of a valid driver’s license with Class “B” or “F” endorsement.

Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. certificate; an Intermediate P.O.S.T. certificate is desirable.

Possession of a Firefighter I certificate from an accredited Fire Academy.

Possession of a First Responder Medical Card and public safety CPR certificate.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Public Safety Officer I is the entry-level classification in this series. Incumbents learn and perform a wide range of law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression and search and rescue activities. This class is flexibly staffed with Public Safety Officer II and incumbents normally advance to the higher level after experience and achieving proficiency which meet the requirements for Level II.

Public Safety Officer II is the fully qualified, experienced classification in the series. Incumbents competently perform the full range of Public Safety Officer assignments.

  • Public Safety Officer I / II differs from the classification of Deputy Sheriff I / II in that the latter class primarily is responsible for law enforcement activities.

Benefits: 100% FTE in a five-step salary system with advancement upon satisfactory completion of a one-year probationary period and annual increases thereafter.

  • Health Insurance: County provides medical, dental and vision coverage for employees with co-payment by employees, dependent upon family status.
  • Vacation: Accrued at the rate of 6.67 hours per month, or 10 vacation days per year.
  • Sick Leave: Earned at the rate of 8 hours per month.
  • Holidays: 16 paid holidays per year.
  • Retirement: Participation in the California Public Employee Retirement System (PERS), New Members 2.7% at 57 plan (when sworn)
  • Deferred Compensation: Voluntary deferred compensation program offered.
  • $1,000 per year uniform allowance
  • 9% POST incentive increase contingent on acquiring intermediate and advanced certificates
  • 1-1/2% swing shift differential increase
  • Overtime hours available as authorized by the Sheriff.
  • Housing Differential. All ACSO employees who reside in Alpine County will receive a total of two hundred fifty dollars ($250) per pay period
