What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrochemist Scientist position at Alsym Energy?
Job Title: Electrolyte Scientist/Electrochemist
Industry Background: Energy storage systems is a rapidly emerging field. Over the last few years, supply-chain constraints and significant safety incidents arising from lithium-ion batteries globally have resulted in a dramatic increase in costs and reduced confidence in the reliability of the technology. Alsym is working on an exciting proprietary aqueous battery technology that is expected to compete with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries while offering the technology at a fraction of the cost and with inherent non-flammability.
Key Qualifications:
- PhD. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or related discipline
- 2 years industry experience with electrolyte development for batteries
- Recent PhDs or Postdoctoral fellows with extensive hands-on battery experience will also be considered.
- Hands on experience in battery assembly and teardown techniques for coin/pouch cells
- Deep knowledge of fundamental electrochemistry and understanding of critical battery tradeoffs
- Knowledge of common electrolyte systems; including common electrolyte salt, solvents, additives, and a good understanding of their role in device performance.
- Strong candidates will be proficient in various electrochemical and chemical characterization techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic cycling, GITT measurements, XRD etc.
- Previous work experience with moisture sensitive materials in a glovebox or dry room set up is a plus.
- Ability to advance multiple projects in a fast-paced and multidisciplinary environment.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with computational scientists and implement new technology from concept through detailed design and testing/demonstration.
- Work with a cross-company team of diverse backgrounds to understand and maximize battery performance by designing novel electrolytes and improving existing electrolyte formulations.
- Work in tandem with synthesis team to assess and enhance the electrochemical performance of new materials and develop mechanistic understanding.
- Advance the development of physicochemical analyses such as conductivity, transference number, diffusivity, and cyclic voltammetry.
- Assemble, test and complete post-mortem analysis of pouch cells/coin cells to develop a good understanding of SEI formation and perform failure mode analysis.
- Communicate technical findings and propose corrective actions.
