Summary
The Altamont School seeks an experienced music teacher. We are interested in candidates who possess a passion for teaching students in grades five through twelve, a firm understanding of music techniques and instruction, and a commitment to using varied and dynamic teaching methods. The candidate should also be willing to contribute to student life at Altamont by playing a leadership role beyond the classroom.

Essential Functions
- Teach courses in music theory, instrumental and vocal performance, and music history for students in grades five through twelve.
- Deliver lessons that teach students the core competencies of Altamont’s music program, which are to cultivate an appreciation for music, unlock a capacity for creative expression, and develop musical skills and techniques.
- Use a variety of instructional methods to facilitate active student participation.
- Offer students encouragement, support, and honest feedback.
- Maintain a classroom environment that is enthusiastic, engaging, and inclusive.
- Exhibit strong classroom management skills.
- Assess student progress while maintaining close communication with parents and appropriate school personnel.
- Mentor advanced music students as they hone their technical abilities and develop their musical style.
- Showcase student work by organizing performances and concerts for the Altamont and greater Birmingham communities.
- Sponsor the Altamont Musicians Society.
Support the mission, policies, and practices of The Altamont School.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in music education, music performance, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Experience teaching music and organizing and directing musical ensembles.
- Flexibility, organization, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of students.
- Instruct students while managing their behavior during classes and class-related activities.
