Title: Veterinary Surgical Assistant
FLSA Status: Non-exempt, $15.00/hour
Part-time: 16-29 hours per week
Full-time: 30-40 hours per week
Wanting to get a foot into the veterinary world? This entry-level position will provide you with clinic experience on the ground level. You will become familiar with the innerworkings of a veterinary clinic while gaining experience and skills necessary to move into more hands-on roles such as veterinary assisting or even veterinary technician.
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for maintaining proper disease control protocols, including cleaning of facility, preparation of surgical packs, laundry, and general maintenance of facility.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Works closely with Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and other staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Perform daily cleaning of kennels, cages and public areas, following proper disease control protocol to ensure a sterile environment
2. Keep veterinary technicians informed of animal behavior, health or concerns
3. Stock all kennel/cleaning supplies as needed
4. Stock areas and spot-clean kennels and public areas throughout the day
5. Clean surgical laundry, clean and sonicate surgical instruments and prepare surgical packs as needed
6. Clean, fold, and stock kennel laundry throughout the clinic
7. Attend scheduled one-on-ones and staff meetings
8. Working closely with other clinic staff to uphold our clinic mission
9. Be punctual and a team-player
10. Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
1. Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work standing for 5 or more hours.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally throughout the day.
- Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly.
- Must be able to see fine detail in a variety of situations.
- Must be able to work in conditions with animal dander and other allergens.
- Must be able to clean up various animal bodily fluids such as urine, feces, vomit, and blood.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Candidate should be highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude. Must be able to keep on task with minimal supervision. Must be comfortable with closing the clinic by self once or twice per week.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The offices and operations of a high-volume spay/neuter clinic can be high stress and busy at times. This position is scheduled for 5 days/week, usually Monday through Friday; however, the schedule can change and may sometimes require weekend hours. A typical schedule for full-time is Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm. Can include working some overtime depending on clinic needs.
Candidate must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests.
