The City of Brandon is seeking applicants for the position of Police Officer with the Brandon Police Department (BPD).
As an officer within the BPD, you will perform general functions related to the protection of life and property, promote public safety, assist the general public, and respond to emergency situations as they occur. Police Officers report directly to a Police Lieutenant, a Sergeant, and/or the Chief of Police.
Essential functions include:
Handle Emergency Situations and Calls for Assistance: Respond in a prompt and safe manner to emergency and non-emergency situations; Control the scene as needed; direct and reroute traffic; maintain scene security and ensure proper documentation as required; Provide basic medical assistance if necessary and assist ambulance services and the fire department as needed and appropriate; Respond to complaints by the public.
Conduct Investigations: Conduct investigations involving crimes, traffic accidents, animal complaints, city code violations and other matters of daily law enforcement business; gathers and preserves evidence; obtains statements from al person connected with investigations; make arrests where applicable and completes all necessary forms and reports as required; Conduct searches and surveillance as necessary in accordance with all laws, policies and procedures; Perform follow-up investigations as necessary.
Promote Public Safety: Patrol designated areas; control traffic as needed; prepare citations and/or warnings as required; Ensure that laws and ordinances are fully enforced; Conduct public education programs as assigned; Serve criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas; testify as a court witness.
Communicate effectively with the department personnel, other law enforcement and safety officials and organizations, other City Employees, and the general public: Maintain positive public relations with residents, community, business representatives and the public; Represent the Police Department in a variety of local, county, state and other meetings; Work collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies to ensure consistent and comprehensive services to the citizens of Brandon.
Miscellaneous: Prepare documentation and reports in a timely, concise and thorough manner; interviewing victims suspects, and witnesses as required ; Attend seminars, meetings and training to learn current and proper techniques; Properly care for and maintain department issued equipment, including vehicles, uniforms, weapons, and training manuals.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Assist and support other department personnel as able; Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to this position.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Minimum:
- Must meet South Dakota minimum state standards for employment as a law enforcement officer and possess or obtain certification under the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission within one year of living in the state.
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must have, at minimum, an associate degree from an accredited institution; or 1 year law enforcement experience to include corrections; or 1 year military experience with an honorable discharge; or any such combination.
- Must not have unlawfully used any prescription drug, controlled substance, or cannabis within 1 year prior to the time of application.
- Must have no convictions of any crime by any state or federal government punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary.
Preferred:
- Must have effective skills in verbal and written communications; relationships with peers and public; customer service; and critical thinking.
- Must have technical abilities to operate phones, radios, computers, and field equipment.
- Must be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Must be able to deal with individuals in stressful conditions, including physical violence.
- Must be able to develop skills in the use of firearms, first aid, emergency vehicle operation, and other police-related activities.
- Must be able to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Must be able to rapidly acquire working knowledge of modern approved principles, practices, and procedures of police work.
- Must be able to quickly learn state laws and city ordinances.
- Must be able to quickly learn locations, streets, landmarks, and routes within City of Brandon.
Physical Capabilities
- Position includes some office work and considerable field work; office work will be generally sedentary, with occasional lifting up to 25 pounds; field work may range from sedentary to highly strenuous activity
- Must maintain physical conditioning at a level where officer is able to perform the essential functions of the position and operate job-related equipment at a high level, including, but not limited to patrol vehicles, lethal and nonlethal weapons, radios, handcuffs, fire extinguishers, first aid kits and crime scene kits
- Must be able to meet all of the physical demands required of a police officer, including driving, walking, running, chasing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, bending, balancing, climbing, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, holding, fingering/keyboarding, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing

- Subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident and for-cause drug testing
- Pre-employment screening may also include comprehensive background check, personal history statement, credit check, psychological assessment, criminal history, driving record and physical examination with the release of medical information.
Certified Officer starting pay: $27.74/hour with step increases depending upon qualifications and experience. Credit may be given for experience.
