Key Responsibilities:
Payroll Processing:
Ensure accurate and timely processing of employee payroll, including wages, bonuses, commissions, deductions, and taxes.
Handle payroll adjustments, corrections, and retroactive pay calculations.
Compliance and Taxation:
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax laws, including filing and reporting.
Calculate and process employee tax deductions and other contributions, such as 401(k), health benefits, and garnishments.
Stay updated on changes to tax laws and regulations, implementing necessary changes.
Reporting and Record-keeping:
Prepare and maintain payroll reports, including earnings statements, tax filings, and year-end reports (W-2s, 1099s).
Review payroll records for accuracy and completeness, ensuring compliance with internal and external audit requirements.
System Management:
Utilize payroll software or systems to process payroll and maintain employee records.
Troubleshoot payroll system issues and work with IT or vendor(s) to implement system upgrades or resolve problems.
Employee Inquiries and Support:
Serve as the point of contact for payroll-related inquiries, providing guidance and resolving any issues related to pay discrepancies, deductions, or benefits.
Process Improvement:
Help identify and implement areas for efficiency improvements, automation, or cost savings.
Help identify and lead new payroll-related technologies or best practices to streamline operations.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of experience processing payroll
An Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or equivalent work experience
Attention to Detail: Accuracy is crucial in payroll processing, so attention to detail is a must.
Payroll Systems Knowledge: Proficiency in payroll software (e.g., ADP, Paychex, Workday) and HRIS systems.
Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of tax laws, wage laws, and employment regulations (e.g., FLSA, state/local tax regulations).
Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze payroll data and resolve discrepancies using Excel or Google Sheets (ability to perform pivot tables, vlookups, basic formulas, etc)
Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills for handling employee inquiries and working with management teams.
Problem-Solving: Ability to identify, troubleshoot and resolve or provide recommendations for payroll issues efficiently.
Experience building and maintaining cross-functional partnerships
Demonstrated ability to adapt to shifting priorities and processes
Preferred Qualifications
Certifications: Payroll certifications, such as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamentals of Payroll Certification (FPC), highly desirable
ADP Workforce Now highly preferred
Workday Payroll experience is a plus

Occasionally ascending or descending stairs, ramps and the like.
Moving about to accomplish tasks and/or moving from one worksite to another.
Adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
Operating motor vehicles.
Occasional sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing/driving/flying
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $86,400 - $108,000
Commission Eligible: No
Equity Eligible: Yes
Travel: Yes - Required up to 5% of the time. This would exclusively be for org on/off sites throughout the year as needed.
Location Requirement: Employment at Alto is limited to individuals residing in the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington (WA), and Wisconsin.
Employment Authorization Requirement: Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. At this time, Alto is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa.
