POSITION: School Nurse
SUPERVISOR: Building Principal
PRIMARY FUNCTION:Responsibilities of this job include executing tasks and duties associated with protecting the optimal health status of children.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must possess:
- A Registered Nurse License
- School Nurse endorsement preferred
- Without School Nurse endorsement you must complete a 6-week ISBE course, RNs In Schools- Expanding your Special Education Role
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides health assessments
- Obtains a health and development history as needed
- Screens and refers findings of deficiencies in vision and hearing
- Observes the child for development and health patterns in making health assessments
- Identifies deviant health findings
- Develops and implement a health plan
- Consults with parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school health matters.
- Initiates referral to parents, school personnel, and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow-up
- Provides ongoing health counseling with pupils, parents, school personnel, and health agencies
- Advises and assists in implementing the modification of the educational program to meet the health needs of individual students
- Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care to students
- Maintains health data to accommodate the individual needs of students
- Participates as the health team specialist on the Child Case Study Team to develop the Individual Educational Plan (IEP)
- Plans and implements school health management protocols for children with chronic health problems
- Administers medication to students according to physician’s orders
- Participates in-home visits to assess the family’s needs as related to the child’s health
- Provides for and assists in developing procedures for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury, emotional disturbance, and psychological problems
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through prevention, immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious disease
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison person among the home, school, and community
- Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers
- Engages in research and evaluation of school health services for school health programs and school nursing practices
- Assists in the formation of health policies and goals and objectives for the school district
- Participates in the education program by providing health instruction and in-service education
- Coordinates in-services education relating the health issues, health problems, and new trends in health, and serves as a health resource person to students, parents, and other members of the staff.
- Communicates current health information and data to students, parents, and staff members on a regular basis
- Continues to update staff members with pertinent information relating to individual pupil health needs
- Counsels adolescents concerning problems such as school-age pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and drug abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices
- Serves as a resource person to classroom teachers in health instruction
- Maintain health and immunization records
- Supervise legality concerning the administration of medication to students
- Complete other reasonable duties as assigned during the normal work day/year or in case of an emergency situation
