Altus specializes in delivering comprehensive engineering, prototyping, testing, and production capabilities, including design, fabrication, assembly, and compliance support to our Government customers. The Carpenter will be responsible for constructs, repairs, and modifies wooden items like boxes, crates, and pallets using hand and power tools, and applies preservatives and markings as needed.
We are looking for an individual that can use their Carpenter experience to add value and make a significant impact as a Carpenter to NAVAIR for this opportunity.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Construct and repair items such as boxes, crates, pallets, and storage bins from wood and wood substitutes
- Fabricate, repair, modify, and replace woodwork on vehicle sides and beds
- Design, produce, and test wood products
- Build furniture using hand tools
- Study specifications and measure, mark, and cut boards using patterns, templates, ruler, pencil, and hand and power saws
- Verify dimensions using calipers or rules
- Ensure wood isn't warped, cracked, or swollen
- Fasten or install parts using hammers, nailing machines, or power staples
- Insert wood bracings, cardboard files, and felt pads in containers
- Add fasteners and adhesives and connect the pieces to form a complete unit
- Sand products using sanders or sandpaper
- Stain or coat products with lacquer or varnish and set products out to dry
- Use automated machinery such as computerized numerical control (CNC) machines
- Set up, operate, and tend to drill presses, lathes, shapers, routers, sanders, planers, and wood-nailing machines
- Operate specialized pieces of woodworking machinery
- Work to preserve antiques
- Design and create sets of cabinets customized for particular spaces
- Create wooden accents and trim
- Create scale models of products or buildings used in construction
- Construct dies used in castings
- Perform work in a high production assembly line facility
- Complete all stages of the woodworking process
- Repair wooden furniture, cabinets, and other wood products
- Apply paint to raw wood
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and company policies
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Junior: 0-3 years of relevant or equivalent carpentry or woodworking experience; Journeyman: 3 years of relevant or equivalent carpentry or woodworking experience
- Active U.S. DoD SECRET Security Clearance (Must have interim clearance before start date)
- Must possess a valid Maryland Drivers License
Work Conditions:
Conditions will vary. Capable of working outdoors and occasionally from elevated work platforms with a fall protection harness and in temperatures ranging from 0-120. The position will include: 45% standing, 20% bending, 15% reaching, 5% sitting, 5% walking, and 10% lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Overtime is a requirement of this position.
